12 Things You Only Understand If You Grew Up In Austin, TX

If you grew up in Austin, TX, this is the article for you. Read on to relate to the 12 things only people who grew up here would understand.

1. Friday Night Lights is more than just a TV show.

Come rain or shine and win or loose, the whole high school (and then some) attended Friday night football games as if it was their religion.

2. The “I love you” wall.

As overrated and touristy as the “I love you” wall is, you know you’d be lying if you said you didn’t have your fair share of pictures there.

3. Restaurants without live music will never be up to par.

The live music capital of the world has spoiled you so much with live, local artist pop ups and Austin City Limits that any entertainment environment sans live music just will. not. do.

4. 90 degree summer days feel breezy.

When temps creep up to the hundreds in the summertime, you start praying for those 90 degree projected pool days.

5. Jeans are perfectly acceptable for formal wear.

The Texas tuxedo is no joke… until you’re the country club laughing stock for being too under dressed.

6. H-E-B.

While Whole Foods will always be the hometown honey, no general grocery store will ever measure up to H-E-B. I’d try to explain this further, but you’d have to of grew up in Austin, TX to understand every Austinite’s loyalty to Texas’ favorite grocery store.

7. Baby’s first word was “y’all.”

More than just a word, being the person who says “y’all” has became a part of your identity.

8. Spontaneous photo shoots on the side of the highway were not uncommon.

Bluebonnet season only lasts a few short months, gotta get it while it’s hot!

9. Decorating a 360 tree was more important than decorating your home during the holiday season.

And chances are you’ve been planning the theme of your tree since August.

10. Unreal traffic.

You always add 5-10 minutes to your ETA. Despite the time or place, Austin traffic is its own kind of beast.

11. Lake Travis vs. Lake Austin.

If you grew up in Austin, TX, you distinguish yourself as a Lake Travis boater or a Lake Austin boater. You CAN NOT be both.

12. Austin, TX for life.

And finally, you overemphasize that you are from Austin, because heaven forbid you are any other kind of Texan.
