Saying “I love you” can be a terrifying, yet exciting thing- but what do you do when your significant other just smiles, or says “thank you?” Here are 5 things to do when your significant other doesn’t say I love you back!
Naturally, the first thing you might do is freak out and wonder what you’re doing wrong, but don’t worry too much! You might have just caught them off-guard, and perhaps they just weren’t expecting it- we’ve all been in those situations where we don’t know what to say or do!
Okay, so you were ready, and maybe they just weren’t! It’s super important to remember that everyone moves at their own speed, they could have had a bad experience with relationships in the past, and maybe they just don’t want to rush things! Just be patient- it’ll happen when they’re ready!
“I love you” isn’t the only way to say “I love you”- they could express love another way and just can’t say those 3 words. Simply checking up on you during the day, asking how you are, making plans, and telling you they care shows that they think about you a lot, and probably just can’t say “I love you” yet- but they’re still showing it.
If it’s something that’s really bothering you- don’t hesitate to talk about it. Just tell them that it’s offsetting to you and they’ll simply explain, and give you closure on the issue. Chances are, they don’t know it’s bothering you, and will just explain that they’re not ready, or that it’s too soon, maybe even that they were gonna say it soon- at least this way, you’ll know!
Honestly, they just might be scared to say it. Sometimes people associate “I love you”, with a new set of responsibilities in the relationship, and they’re just scared to take it to that level. Saying it doesn’t change too much in a relationship, it just confirms their feelings for you. Give them time to think and realize that nothing will change, and it doesn’t entail new expectations in the relationship. You’re not suddenly going to expect them to be a God-sent significant other, but a lot of people see it this way!
