Moving out of your parents’ house is a huge goal for any student and recent grad. Once you taste the freedom that comes from living on your own in a dorm setting, it can be difficult to move back in, especially with the rules. 1. Set up an account at a new bank if needed.

If you are moving to a new city and you have your current accounts at a community bank, transfer your accounts to another bank that is in your new town or city. While online banking makes things easier, being able to go to a physical bank to resolve issues is easier than communicating online or over the phone.

2. Speaking of the bank, make sure you have money saved up to last a while in case of an emergency

Make sure you have enough money saved up to cover your rent, utilities, groceries, loan payments, and other necessities for at least a couple months. While you may have a job lined up, it is important to have enough in savings in case of an emergency so that you do not have to panic or worry about finances.

3. Have the items you need to live on your own

When living in your parents’ house, you probably took advantage of the little things that were readily available. From coasters to kitchen devices and tissues, these things were items that you probably did not have to worry about purchasing. Now, they are something to make sure you have before moving.

4. Have a job lined up in your new town or city

If you are moving to an entirely new place and your current workplace is not within commuting distance, make sure you have something lined up. This will allow you to have a stream of income and will make for a seamless transition into a new place.

5. Make sure you have the necessary skills you need to live on your own

Was your former roommate an excellent chef who only required that you pitch in for ingredients? Did you rely on your mom for sewing things? These are essential skills that you need to learn. Find a few easy recipes to try and have your parents teach you necessary skills that you will need when you move out.
