The Most Important Things I’ve Learnt From Gilmore Girls

Gilmore Girls will forever be one of the best TV shows of all time. Rory and Lorelei’s relationship is a mix of mother/daughter and friendship, and with a dash of coffee and a whole lot of friends, these girls take the world by storm. These are the most important things I’ve learnt from Gilmore Girls.

Coffee Solves Everything

The Gilmore Girls are obsessed with coffee and it solves everything – bad break ups, embarrassing moments, early morning dance contests and troubling times. No matter what the situation, Rory and Lorelei manage to solve their problems with a cup of coffee. Whenever I’m feeling stressed, I take a deep breath, make myself a coffee and reflect.

Real Friends Stay Together

If I’m ever in doubt about a friendship, I just think about Rory and Lane’s friendship and how it survived throughout their childhood into adulthood. Even through Rory going to Yale, Lane stands by her side through it all. Rory is there for Lane when she has her babies and the two are inseparable.

The same goes for Sookie and Lorelei; they’re always there for each other in the toughest times. No matter what life throws at them, they will always be friends, no matter how far apart they are.

Follow Your Dreams

Lorelei wanted to open her Inn, which she did; she followed her dreams. And Rory wanted to go to Harvard – even though she chose Yale, she sets an example for young people everywhere: it’s okay to change your mind and follow a different path. Rory goes to Yale and graduates, successfully going on to report on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. You can follow your dreams too – you don’t have to decide your future now or do anything you don’t want to do.

Put Yourself First

When Rory graduates from Yale, her and Logan break up because they don’t want the same things; Rory wants to pursue her career in journalism and Logan wants her to move away with him. If you love someone enough, you let them set their own goals and accomplish them without getting in the way. Rory did what she had to do for herself and her career.

Never let anyone tell you you can’t do anything – you’re capable of amazing things.

It’s Okay To Make Mistakes

The most important thing I’ve learnt from Gilmore Girls is that it’s okay to make mistakes. Even when everything goes wrong, the ones who care about you will always stay and will always be there to pick you back up.

When Rory and Lorelei fall out, they sort things out together again. When Rory is stuck on her career path, she picks herself back up. When Rory sleeps with Dean, she knows she’s made a mistake but that’s okay. It’s okay to make mistakes as long as we learn from them.

Lorelei falls out with her parents but they slowly repair their relationship. Nothing is impossible to fix. Whenever Lorelei and Rory fall out, they always come back together, no matter what. That’s what best friends and family is all about.
