The Best Tips To Keep Your Dorm Organized

For a lot of kids coming into college, it’s the first time they have to be on their own. A lot of college kids are used to having their parents or guardians taking care of their laundry and other responsibilities. It can be hard for some to figure out the right way to keep yourself organized. Being organized and responsible in life comes from commitment and dedication and having an organized pace to live is a good way to get started on that lifestyle. Majority of the time a dorm room doesn’t offer that much amount of space for you to keep everything organized so it’s important to try and maintain order in your personal space. To avoid having your clothes and any other miscellaneous items scattered around, here are a few tricks that can help you keep everything organized in your dorm room.

Clothes

Having all of your clothes piled up on the floor or thrown around everywhere is probably one of the first things people think of when they think of a typical dorm room. The problem with having your clothes piled up is that it can cause your clothes to wrinkle up. It also creates another mess as you try and look for that one shirt at the bottom of the pile. Hanging your clothes can look very pleasing if you do it in a way that appeals to your eyes. Hang the clothes that you consider special for going out or =that are just nicer. Color coordinate your shirts and tops. Having them color coordinated will save you time for when you want to get that blue shirt. It also makes putting your laundry away much faster as you don’t need to find a little spot in your closet, you can just go to the color and hang it up right there. Have another little spot towards the end for all your jeans and pants or shorts that you wear out more commonly. Now you’re probably still stuck with a bunch of t-shirts and shorts that you probably only wear to lounge around. Depending on how many you have, this is where your drawers come in handy. You can either fold them and have them in one section or you can give them their own. You can use the remaining ones for your socks and any under garments you use. Shoes are another thing that can make your room messy and even turn it into an obstacle course. We have all had those nights where we come home and anything on the floor is dangerous. Depending on how many shoes you own, a shoe rack in one corner of your room is a great idea to keep your shoes all kept in one spot. If you have a little more than a few pairs, buying the large pockets that hang behind your door is another great place to put all of your shoes in.

Wall Space

If you’re anything like me, you’ll come to college and move into a dorm room half the size of your old room and you’ll bring everything you used to have plus a bunch of new things. We all know that there is no way to make everything fit. A great way to organize your wall space and remove any items that you won’t be using is to find a theme. Whether it’s a color or your favorite movies or music, pick a theme you like and decorate around that theme. Also remember that you’re going to buy more things for your room as your time in college continues so keeping everything you come with originally is very unrealistic. Tapestries are very popular amongst college students. They cover a large amount of wall space and have an unlimited amount of designs you can choose from to have on them. No matter how simplistic or detailed you are, they make them for just about anything. Corkboards are another popular item used for wall space. Cork boards can be used to put up pictures and polaroids as well as other things like pins or sticky notes. Another great idea for your wall that has gotten very popular are records. A lot of college students have been getting into vinyl. Buying frames for them and hanging your favorite covers up on your wall is a great way to cover up some wall space.

Miscellaneous Items

Now there’s a lot of other stuff that you need to have in your dorm room. There’re book bags, chargers, books, towels, hats, belts, etc. How do you keep everything organized? Chargers are something that people take everywhere with them and lose very easily. Buying a charging cube that has multiple ports and plugging it in right by your bed or desk is a great way to keep all of your chargers in one spot and not have to move them around so often and forget where you placed them. Luckily bags are very easy to hook onto things. Hanging them behind your door is a quick and easy way to just drop it off and not have to worry about it. Similar to how the shoes have large pockets behind your door, bags, hats and belts also fit into those large pockets. Keeping all of your smaller items organized can be very difficult to do, but there any many products to help you put your smaller items away, so you don’t have to worry about them being out and about. Buying smaller cabinets or bins that you can slide and hide away under your bed are another great idea. Everyone has a different lifestyle, and everyone has different things that they value more than other people would. Just remembering where your things are is very beneficial in the long run in keeping your dorm room organized. Lay out all of your items and ask yourself what theme you want to start your college experience in. Create a room that makes you feel at home that also expresses who you are.
