Skin Care Regimes Based On Your Skin Type

Your skin is your own. It’s finicky, it’s sensitive, it’s oily, it’s dry, but it’s yours, and you have to know how to take care of it. Learning a skin care regime that works for you is always hard, which is why I’m here to help. Based on your skin type, you should be doing different things to perfect and maintain your beautiful, healthy, and glowing skin.Read the descriptions below each skin type to see where you might place yourself, and check out our recommended skincare routines!

With any skincare regime, the order you need to follow for the daytime is:

  • Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Antioxidant Serum
  • Eye Cream
  • Acne Spot Treatment
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen

If applying makeup, follow with your primer and the rest of your makeup routine after completing the steps above.

Your nighttime routine should be similar to your daytime routine, and should resemble this order:

  • Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Eye Cream
  • Treatments
  • Hydrating Mask or Face Oil
  • Moisturizer or Night Cream

Please, I beg of you, make sure that you remove all of your makeup at night. It will make all the difference.

1. Normal Skin

Someone with normal skin wouldn’t typically describe their skin as oily or dry. While you might feel like your skin is oily or dry on some days, it’s not a constant factor and is usually easy to resolve. You don’t have small or large pores, excessively shiny or cracked skin. Your skin is by all means average. However, this does not mean that you don’t have to maintain the same diligence and care for your skin as everyone else. Just because your skin is normal doesn’t mean you won’t suffer from blemishes, breakouts, and more. It’s important to still follow a proper skincare routine so that your skin remains vibrant and healthy.

I would recommend a set of Mario Badescu products, that can easily be tailored to your skin type.

2. Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, you might feel like your skin is too tight and even flakey. Dry skin could be genetic, or due to a lack of moisture. While some people attribute dry skin (due to a lack of moisture) to insufficient water consumption, they’re wrong. Both dry and oily skin have the same water content, which is why adding water to dry skin does absolutely nothing.

The best thing you can do for your skin is to find a good moisturizer. You’ll be better off with creams rather than lotions, as they contain more oil, making it thicker and more moisturizing. Also, avoid taking long, hot showers, which can actually dry your skin out more.

You should try Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost collection!

3. Oily Skin

People with oily skin would say that their face always seems to be shiny and may suffer more from breakouts, whiteheads, blackheads, or acne. It’s normal for people with oily skin to have larger pores and feel that their makeup doesn’t last as long. It’s also very common for people going through puberty to have oily skin because of their dramatic hormonal changes.

Many people with oily skin try to find the answer in harsh products that contain benzoyl peroxide to get rid of acne, along with other drying ingredients. However, this could actually have the opposite effect, and your skin could produce more oil to make up for the treatment of harsh, drying products. The best thing you can do for oily skin is gently exfoliate in the morning and at night. Exfoliation will help you clear out the dead skin cells trapped in pores, which will help avoid acne or blemishes. Try using salicylic acid, a natural and gentle exfoliant. Oily skin types should stay away from thick, heavy cosmetics that can block pores. And make sure you remove your makeup each night before going to bed, and before you head to the gym.

On the upside, with oily skin, you’re going to age beautifully!

4. Combination Skin

Combination skin is the most common skin type. Many people who have combination skin often mistake their skin type for oily, when in fact only some parts of the face are oily, while other parts of the face may be dry and flakey. You may find that your face is shiny or oily on your forehead, nose, and chin, most commonly referred to as your “T-zone.” It can be hard finding products that satisfy both ends of the spectrum, but you should definitely stay away from any and all harsh products. Stick to natural ingredients, with products containing green tea or cucumber for example. Because you have a mixture of skin types, you should also have two different types of moisturizers — a heavier one for your cheeks and other dry or normal areas, and another lighter moisturizer for your T-zone.

I would give Aveeno’s positively radiant collection a try. With a multitude of different moisturizers and cleansers, you can mix and match for your skin type. (And yes, that is Jennifer Aniston.)

5. Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, you might feel you are a combination of all the above skin types, but with visible redness and irritation. Sensitive skin types can be caused by skin conditions like rosacea or allergies. So, once again, please avoid harsh treatments. Finding the right skincare regime for you is personal, as your skin can become easily inflamed. However, try to stick to natural skincare with soothing ingredients, and stay away from anything with fragrance.

I would try out Glossier’s ‘The Skincare Set’ made with soothing ingredients and products, like their ‘milk jelly cleanser’ that won’t leave your skin feeling irritated.

There are many ways to classify different skin types, you may feel like you don’t fit in only one category, and that’s okay! Finding a skincare regime that works for you is a lifelong process, but hopefully with these tips you can find something that works for you! Make sure to follow the correct order when taking care of your skin. Just like makeup, your skincare deserves the perfect regime.
