If you love romantic films, there are always those go-to films that you could watch over and over again and they would still make you cry even when you know what happens at the end. Romantic films just have something about them and every love story just has you gripped. Here is our list of 10 romantic films guaranteed to make you cry!

1. The Notebook (2004)

Based on the book by Nicholas Sparks, this romantic film is set in 1940s South Carolina. Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) is a mill worker and has his eyes set on rich girl Allie (Rachel McAdams). The two begin to date and eventually fall in love despite the disapproval from Allie’s parents. 

Noah eventually goes off to war and Allie falls in love with another guy who she is set to marry but when Noah comes back from the war two years later, what Allie and Noah had together is anything but a whirlwind romance. 

2. Titanic (1997)

A classic romantic film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, this lengthy but gripping film is one that will definitely make you cry.

The Titanic ship was dubbed ‘unsinkable’ and this film based on the real events of the sinking ship, portrayed a tragic love story between Jack (Leonardo Dicaprio), a poor orphan, and Rose (Kate Winslet) a young girl from a first-class background.

They quickly fall in love with each other and the love they have for each other is tested when the ship starts falling apart after hitting an iceberg.

3. A Walk To Remember (2002)

Similar to The Notebook, A Walk To Remember is also a film based on a novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. 

Set in North Carolina, this film follows high school senior Landon Carter (Shane West) who begins to form a strong relationship with classmate Jamie (Mandy Moor) who he and his friends looked down on. They begin to find out more about each other and realise that their opinions of each other were wrong. Eventually, they fall in love but they find that time is running out.

4. Me Before You (2016)

This is one of the romantic films that will make you cry regardless of whether you love romantic films or not. 

Based on the book of the same name which is an international best selling phenomenon, the film did the book a great justice. Will Traynor (Sam Claflin) becomes paralysed from the neck down from a motorbike accident. Lou (Emilia Clarke), who has a quirky personality and sense of style, becomes Will’s caregiver and as time goes on, they start to form a strong bond.

5. 500 Days of Summer (2009)

This is more of a rom-com but in between the comedic scenes, there are also hints of sadness. This film focuses on the love story between Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel).

Tom is a writer for greeting cards and is also a hopeless romantic. He falls in love with Zooey but is heartbroken when she suddenly dumps him. Tom is confused and tries to understand what went wrong and relives the 500 days he had with Summer. 

6. Love, Simon (2018)

This romantic film has it all: romance, drama and comedy. It is a feel-good film but it will also bring you to tears.

Love, Simon is about 17-year-old high school student Simon Spier (Nick Robinson). He hasn’t told his family or friends he is gay and things get a bit more complicated when he starts to fall in love with an anonymous classmate that he meets online. In trying to solve both his problems, there are laughs and tears.

7. P.S. I Love You (2008)

This film is probably one of the most heartbreaking romantic films ever. If you don’t cry after watching this film, there is something wrong with you.

Gerry (Gerard Butler) dies from an illness and in preparation for his death, he leaves letters for his wife Holly (Hilary Swank) who he knows will take his death badly. The letter starts on her 30th birthday and help her ease her grief and the will to carry on living.

8. The Fault In Our Stars (2014)

A teen romance film based on the book of the same name by John Green, this film follows the story of Hazel (Shailene Woodley) who is a 16-year-old cancer patient. Attending a cancer support group, she meets Gus (Ansel Elgort).

The two quickly become friends and confide in each other and find that they both love the book ‘An Imperial Affliction’ by Peter Van Houton. In trying to battle their illnesses and live their lives as normal teenagers, they receive an invitation to meet with Van Houton in Amsterdam which sparks them to go on the biggest adventure of their lives.

9. The Vow (2012)

Another major tear-jerker, this romantic film is bound to have you ugly crying. 

Paige (Rachel McAdams) and her husband Leo (Channing Tatum) are happily married but a car accident leaves Paige in a coma that changes everything forever. Paige wakes up from the coma but has severe memory loss and doesn’t recognise Leo. Leo is determined to make Paige remember who he is and the memories they shared together.

10. Romeo and Juliet (1996)

This is the ultimate love story that everyone knows about. An adaptation of Shakespeare’s most famous play, this film is set in post-modern city Verona Beach.

The Capulets and Montagues are rival gangs where Juliet (Claire Danes) is a Capulet while Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a Montague. Juliet attends a masquerade ball where she meets Romeo. Falling in love with each other, their story of forbidden love only ends in tragedy.
