I only knew University of Akron through a college search engine website, so I didn’t know what I would find when visiting. When I got to campus for the tour and throughout the day I realized more and more that this was my dream college I never knew about. I already decided I wanted to attend University of Akron by the end because of the people, but there were many other things that made the decision easier. Keep reading for the top reasons why I chose to go to the University of Akron!
There are 4 Starbucks around campus. There are Starbucks in the Student Union, Bierce Library, Exchange Street Residence Hall and Polsky Building. As someone who loves fancy beverages (I even worked at as a Starbucks barista in high school) I was pleased to hear this. But what really got me excited was the fact I could use my meal plan dining dollars to pay.
Outside the Goodyear Polymer Center is a large sculpture built by famous artist Dale Chihuly. I always loved glass art made by this artist because there is a museum with many of his works in my hometown. None of his work I had previously seen was over 40 feet tall. Made of 80 “rocks” and standing over 40 feet tall, it is truly an amazing sculpture (and it looks like blue rock candy which is cool).
Who doesn’t want a kangaroo for a mascot? No one. Zippy the Kangaroo is one of only a few female mascots in the United States. And she’s really cute. Zippy has cheered our sports teams to victory many times. She even won the 2007 Capital One Mascot of the Year Challenge.
I really liked that University of Akron is far away from where I grew up. I love new experiences like most students and I wanted to experience a new city. It’s still close enough to visit my family and for them to visit me. The cool thing about Akron is that it looks similar to the city I grew up in and the campus is right in the middle of downtown.
I learned employers look at University of Akron students and they see people they want to hire. The University of Akron is known for their skilled, talented and well educated graduates. They offer many career fairs for students to meet the employers as well as an online job board. Career services really works hard to help students find both internships and long term careers.
