The Pros and Cons of Accepting Early Admission

So you got accepted into a college, but now comes the hard part…do you accept right away for early admission or do you wait a while? This is a big decision to make, but don’t worry, here is a list of the pros and cons of accepting early admission.

The Pros

1. No last minute panic.

You will notice as the days till the end of the year dwindle down, all your friends will be panicking on what school to go to, and scrambling to get all the paperwork done. Meanwhile you can just sit back and relax knowing that you have already committed somewhere.

2. Scholarships.

One perk about accepting early admission is the chance for more MONEY! Already being committed to a school puts you first in line to be considered for the school’s scholarships, and trust me, you will need every penny you can get.

3. No more applications.

Applying for schools can really break the bank. Some applications come in at $100 or more! Once you have already committed to a college, you are done with having to spend hours and hours stressing about those essays and you will no longer have to dish out the dough for all those applications.

4. You can start making connections.

Once you know you are going to your chosen school, you can start planning. If you are thinking about playing a sport in college, you can reach out to the coach. Some schools also have competitive scholarship days that you can attend to be considered for more scholarships. Also, if your school is a plane ride away, you can start looking for flights now and potentially find a better deal. You can also start looking into clubs on campus and see what you might be interested in joining.

5. Spirit gear.

Now that you have chosen a college you can get ahead of the game and start buying gear to rep your school! This is especially handy if you have a birthday coming up…bring on the college swag birthday presents!

The Cons

1. It’s a commitment…and commitments are scary.

Once you make that choice to commit…you’re locked in, you have to go. It doesn’t really allow you to explore other schools anymore. That’s why you should be 100% confident in the choice to commit early, and once you’ve committed, don’t second-guess yourself.

2. The wait seems so much longer.

If you are itching to head to college, knowing where you are going to go can make the wait seem so much longer. But one thing you can do to pass the time is start looking at cute dorm ideas or make a packing list, it’s never to early to start preparing.

3. You can’t change your mind.

Sometimes you might hear of a school that you may possibly want to look into, but if you have accepted early admission elsewhere, it doesn’t matter. So many things can happen before the final deadline and you never know what schools might reach out to you, making early admission acceptance that much more intimidating!

4. You can’t compare financial aid offers.

Once you are committed to a school, you are committed to the financial aid that they offer. If financial aid is a big factor in your school decision, you might want to hold off on accepting early admission so you have more opportunity to see what financial aid packages and offers are available to you.

5. Grades.

An important part of getting accepted into a college is your grades. Usually early admission applications only look at your first semester of senior year and your past high school grades. This means you really have to buckle down and get decent grades all through high school.

Early admission definitely has its pros and cons, but whatever you decide on, you should be excited! You are inching your way to graduation; the thrilling world of college awaits you!
