Types Of People You’ll Run Into When In Palm Springs Cali

Palm Springs…the land of sunshine, sand, and palm trees. As a resort town, the Palm Springs area is home to all kinds of year round and seasonal residents. Here are 9 types of people that will run into when in Palm Springs!

1. The Snowbird

The snowbird is a seasonal resident, usually from Canada that owns a timeshare or home in the Palm Springs area. Snowbird season starts in winter, when people escape their cold homes to the warmth of the mild desert winter. Snowbird season means an influx of about 150,000 people for three months!

2. The Tourist

As a destination town, Palm Springs sees an influx of visitors from all over the globe! Last year there was around 13.6 million visitors throughout the area! These vacationers differ from snowbirds because their stays are much shorter! In 2017, the tourism industry brought in $5.5 billion dollars to the local economy of the area! You will be sure to run into a lost tourist or two while in Palm Springs!

3. The Golfer

There is a giant golfing culture in Palm Springs! There are more golf courses here than an any other place in the state! The city’s golf mania began in the 1920’s when the first golf courses were built. Today, the Palm Springs area is home to the PGA’s HUMANA Challenge and LPGA’s ANA Inspiration tournament. It’s the most popular golfing destination in California, so it’s a given that you will run into this type of person in Palm Springs!

4. LGBTQ Friendly

According to the US Census, Palm Springs ranks in third for top cities with the highest number of same-sex couples per 1000 people. In 2017, the city elected its first all LGBTQ city council! Palm Springs is also home to 2 giant LGBTQ festivals: Dinah Shore Weekend and White Party. In the past, acts like Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry and many more have all performed!

5. The Retired

Palm Springs is known as a place people go to retire and live lavishly after a long working life. It isn’t unusual to see older people living life to the fullest under the sun! The third age lifestyle is anything but boring in Palm Springs and you will be sure to run into these type of people when in Palm Springs, whether it be at the library or at the store!

6. The Dog Owner

The person loves their dog. They let everyone around them know they love their dog too. Most of the stores in Downtown Palm Springs are dog friendly and even have a little water dish for your favorite furry pet to drink from while you shop around. Dogs also take over the weekly VillageFest! It’s like a runway of dogs from left to right and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

7. The Old High School Friend

The old high school friend is a person you don’t talk to anymore but you occasionally bump into at the store. It’s always so confusing, do you say hi and wave or pretend you didn’t see them? There is always awkward eye contact and sometimes even forced small talk. Home sweet home, right?

8. The Athlete

Or at least, the person that dresses like the athlete? This person is always dressed in athleisure clothing and always has a hydroflask in hand. The athlete knows the ins and outs of every hiking trail when in Palm Springs and is always ready to tag along on any outdoor adventure.Their instagram feed features some of the most breathtaking views of the valley!

9. The Celebrity

Granted, this happens more often during Coachella and Stagecoach, Palm Springs has always been the celebrity hideaway destination for decades just check out some of its legendary celebrity homes belonging to people like Frank Sinatra, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe ! It always seems like there is a star or two lurking around, so keep your eyes out, and you might just have the best new instagram selfie! These are just another types of people group you may run into when in Palm Springs.
