When you think U.S. vacation spots your mind most likely immediately thinks of major, metropolitan cities. New York, Los Angeles, or even Chicago are places people tend to visit, but if you’re looking for a vacation like no other consider the locations below. Although I’m sure you’ve heard of some of these places, you probably haven’t considered them to be destination spots. These ten overlooked U.S. vacation spots are worth the trip.

1. Boulder, Colorado

This city is nestled at the base of the Flatirons in Colorado just thirty minutes west of Denver. What makes Boulder one of the US vacation spots to visit is that not only does it have the quaintness of a small town it also has all of the perks of a major city. Home to The University of Colorado this city manages to cater to people at all walks of life. Here you can hike, bike, eat and shop at the infamous Pear Street Mall. Considering Boulder was once called the “Happiest City” in the country by National Geographic in 2017 don’t be surprised if you find yourself wanting to do more than just visit.

2. Savannah, Georgia

Savannah, Georgia is one of the most historical cities in the United States, not to mention one of the most haunted. The fact that part of the city is literally built on top of of graves along with a deeply twisted history intertwined with facts and fiction makes this city the dream destination for horror enthusiasts everywhere. Even if you aren’t a scare fanatic consider visiting the Bonaventure Cemetery. This massive cemetery allows their visitors to experience history through seeing all of the graves.

3. Portland, Maine

Incase you didn’t know there isn’t just a Portland, Oregon there is also a Portland, Main. This city is predominantly a fishing city that has quickly become a location travelers love to flock to. This is a city straight out of a Hallmark movie. With actual cobblestone streets and the Portland Head Lighthouse you can’t help but feel like you’re about to meet someone who’s going to teach you the true meaning of Christmas, or at least Christmas in July.

4. Portland, Oregon

Now time for Portland, Oregon which you can find on the opposite end of the United States. Here you can experience sprawling parks and gardens. It’s the perfect destination if you’re looking for a low-key vacation.

5. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe, New Mexico is a city rich with history. From the historical significance with the diverse culture to the amazing food there is something here for everyone. One unique experience being the outdoor opera house. Here you can experience a show like no other outside underneath the Santa Fe stars.

6. Glacier National Park, Montana

This National Park is nestled between the United States-Canadian border. Glacier National Park has mountains that have been forming for over 150 million years. Here you can find similar attractions to that of the popular park Yellow Stone, the only difference is the awe-inspiring Glaciers. Here you can camp or rent cabins to experience the wilderness. If anything this vacation spot will make you value the significance of our national parks and you will be able to witness the devastating affects of Global Warming. What was once 150 glaciers have dwindled down to 25, those few left still getting smaller and smaller with each passing year. This is one of the best US vacation spots to experience many different things.

7. Nashville, Tennessee

If you’re a giant country fan you almost have to visit Nashville, Tennessee. Here you can see where country stars have started their beginning at the infamous Bluebird Cafe. From there take yourself across the Cumberland River to the awe-inspiring Grand Ol Opry where country stars were inducted into the timeless genre.

8. Burlington, Vermont

This East Coast city blend the old with the new. Burlington is one of the U.S. vacation spots you can experience the classic architecture of the buildings without compromising the luxury of a major city. Visiting Burlington during the summer makes for the best vacation because you will be hard-pressed to find a day where an outdoor festival of some sort is being put on.

9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

If you’re a fan of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia it may not seem that glamorous but on the contrary this overlooked city is one of the perfect U.S .vacation spots quick getaway. Hope to the liberty bell, Independence Hall and of course the infamous Rocky statue. This city is a key player in America’s history, making it the perfect place for anyone who is a history buff.

10. La Push, Washington

Known for it’s whale watching this small town offers the most simplistic vacation. Here you can experience the beauty of whales watching or enjoy walking across one of the two beaches found here. The vivid culture in La Push is also one for the books, making this one of the best U.S. vacation spots.
