10 Must-Haves In Your Dorm To Make It Feel Like Home

As your home away from home, it is vital for college students to create a warm and familiar space for themselves. Here are 10 must-haves in your dorm to transform your room into a little slice of home.

1. Transform your bed with a mattress topper.

It’s no surprise that your new mattress in your dorm isn’t as comfortable as your bed back home. One thing you can do to get a good night’s sleep on a not so comfortable bed is to get a mattress topper!

2. Decorate your walls with pictures of home.

This one is kind of a no-brainer, but filling your walls with pictures of family and friends can make your cold, cinder block walls feel a little bit warmer.

3. Keep a stash of late-night snacks.

There’s nothing like pigging out on a pack of Oreos in the middle of the night for an all-nighter fuel or just because you feel like it.

4. Hang up some lights to warm up the room.

The lights in your dorm can be a bit too harsh, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get a desk with a built-in lamp. Nothing beats warm, calming globe lights to help you wind down after a busy day.

5. Keep your shower clean and organized.

Forget carrying all of your shower necessities everytime you need to freshen up. Keep your shower organized with shelves to share with your suitemates!

6. Get a huge fluffy rug.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of the cold, white-tiled floors—a huge rug can brighten your dorm and give it a more homey feel.

7. Wake up to a fresh cup of coffee.

Coffee is a must and nothing beats a cup of coffee as soon as you wake up. Invest in a mini Keurig machine to keep in your common room or even right next to your bed.

8. Decorate with comfy and colorful throw pillows.

9. Fill your room with calming scents.

Bring along a candle from home that’ll have you reminiscing.

10. Figure out some sneaky storage.

Dorms are notorious for having minimal storage space. Open up your room by skillfully storing your belongings without sacrificing your dorm aesthetics. Store boxes underneath your bed and cover it all up with a bed skirt.
