Once upon a time in 2017 I attended my first convention. Wondercon 2017 in Anaheim, California, right next to the happiest place on earth, Disneyland. It was exciting. I had always wanted to go to a comic book convention and as a self-proclaimed nerd, I was in heaven. Cosplayers everywhere, Star Wars merch galore, and convention exclusives at almost every corner. I grabbed every single free item I could get my hands on, everything from key chains, lanyards, comics, drawings, the whole shebang. I wanted to savor every single moment of the weekend and embed it into my mind. Naturally, I got to each day of the three day festival early where I eventually met the cast of Riverdale.
Shows like Lucifer, Teen Titans and Riverdale were all holding signings. I wish I had a more interesting story on how I ended up inside the Riverdale line but I didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I was a fan of the show, but I was only planning on going to the panel, not actually attending the signing with the entire cast. Still, I thought why not try. The line was long and tickets were being given on a lottery system. That meant they had a select number of “winning tickets” and people would have to reach out and draw a ticket out– raffle style. I was at the end of the line and security wasn’t very optimistic for me. They said my chances were basically zero and I should just leave, but I stayed. It didn’t hurt to try.
The CW Network. All Rights ReservedI took a deep breath and reached inside. I got one. As a person who never wins everything, this was more shocking to me in a way, than the actual prize. I actually got something! Everybody stared at me as I left the space. Girls were crying, mothers were yelling, but I slipped away into the convention floor like the cat who got the cream.
Wearing a wristband with the word Riverdale on it as like wearing a giant target on my back. Mothers would come up to me and ask questions about the meet and greet. But like them, I didn’t have much information. Never underestimate the power of a fangirl’s mother! I was sleep deprived and tired, but the prospect of meeting the cast of Riverdale gave me butterflies in my stomach. Cole, Lilli, Camila, KJ and the crew were waiting behind a door, and all I could think of was what I was going to say.
I didn’t want to stutter and I didnt want to make myself a fool. I was in the first set of people to meet them, the first line so luckily I got them lively and chirpy.
They felt like peers, people I could see at a party and probably make small talk. It was probably because we are in the same age group but they were lovely.
We shared a few laughs, small talk came easily. I told Camila she was a badass Latina because she is, Cole playfully asked if he was one too. KJ drew nipples on my poster and Marisol Nichols asked how I was. Pretty typical to be honest, but to expect anything else is honestly too much. To anyone also going through a quick meet and greet experience with the cast of Riverdale– I’ll give you the same advice I kept repeating inside my head. Show your appreciation, but remember that these are people not divine beings. Treat them like you would treat any other new person you might meet and you might be surprised at the warmth you might be greeted back with!
