Master The Art Of Layering This Winter With These 10 Layering Tips

When it comes to winter weather, it’s important to know several layering tips in order to stay warm and stylish. Layered outfits are practical during winter because they can keep you warm, comfortable, and still fashionable. If you’re interested in wearing more layered outfits this winter, then keep reading this list for some simple and effective layering tips!

1. Layer with different lengths

In order to avoid looking like you’ve stolen an outfit from Billie Eilish’s closet, you might want to layer with different lengths to avoid an outfit that looks overly bulky. If you’re wearing a ton of layers that all have the same lengths, you might start to lose your silhouette. To avoid this, try wearing layers of varying lengths in order to get back your silhouette and keep your outfit looking stylish and flattering. For example, you might consider wearing high-waisted jeans, a slightly cropped shirt that ends just above your hips, a cardigan or flannel that comes down past your hips, and a coat with a hem that comes down in between your shirt and cardigan/flannel. As simple as it sounds, using varying lengths is actually really helpful for creating a silhouette that isn’t weighed down by a bunch of layers.

2. Tuck in your shirt

If you’re wearing an outfit that has a lot of layers, it’s easy to feel weighed down or even bulky. An easy fix to this is to tuck in your base shirt. By tucking your shirt into your bottoms, you won’t lose your waist. It’ll help you keep a feminine silhouette, and your outfit will look much more flattering. It’s a simple trick that works time and time again!

3. Layer dresses with leggings or tights

Depending on where you live, winter can be absolutely freezing, so it’s easy to ignore dresses and skirts. At first glance, they might seem like an impractical choice for winter weather, but this doesn’t always have to be the case. If you want to wear dresses or skirts in the winter but still want to stay warm, all you have to do is wear leggings or tights underneath! It’s an easy and effective way to make your favorite outfits more seasonally appropriate. The good thing about wearing a dress and leggings combo in the winter is that you’ll still be able to look effortlessly chic without sacrificing your comfort.

4. Wear a layer between your shirt and coat

In order to successfully layer your outfits to stay warm throughout the day, you’ll definitely want to wear a layer in between your shirt and coat. That way, you’ll stay super warm while you’re outside, but you’ll also have an optional layer to wear indoors that won’t make you super hot. It isn’t really practical to wear your coat inside unless you’re really cold, but you might feel too chilly in just your shirt. This is when an extra layer like a flannel or cardigan will be extra useful.

5. Invest in some cute turtlenecks

If you want to stay extra warm this winter, one of the best pieces to layer with is a turtleneck. These shirts are perfect for the wintertime, and they work especially well with layered outfits, too. Interestingly enough, despite the fact that turtlenecks are super modest and don’t reveal a lot of skin, they help create a feminine silhouette. When combined with a light layer of outerwear, your favorite coat, and a few dainty accessories, turtlenecks will help you remain warm and stylish.

6. Always keep an extra outerwear option with you

It’s always a good idea to keep an extra layer of light outerwear in your car, purse, or backpack. You never really know what the temperature will be like in your workplace, classroom, or dining hall. If you don’t want to wear your jacket indoors but feel too cold in just your shirt, it can be super helpful to have an extra flannel or hoodie nearby.

7. Don’t forget to accessorize

When you’re putting together a layered outfit, it can be all too easy to forget about accessories. Since you’re wearing several layers of clothes, you’re probably paying attention solely to the clothing pieces that’ll keep you warm. However, if you don’t want to get lost in all that fabric, it’s important to keep accessories in mind. Even in the winter, you can’t go wrong with wearing jewelry, hair accessories, scarves, and the like. It’s an easy way to bring some life back to your outfit!

8. Wear the right kind of socks

There are all sorts of shoes you can wear in the winter, but if you live in a place where it frequently snows, you might be wearing boots most often. Whether your boots are for fashion or convenience, it’s important that you wear the right kind of socks with your boots. In order to have a layered outfit that’s properly put together, you’ll definitely want to wear boot socks with your boots. They’re comfortable, sensible, and fashionable. Luckily, there are tons of cute boot socks available to purchase, so you won’t have to worry about wearing something you dislike.

9. If you feel weighed down, wear a shoe with a heel

As mentioned prior, it’s easy to feel weighed down when you’re wearing a ton of layers. An easy way to combat this is to wear a shoe that has a slight heel. It isn’t always practical to wear high heels in the winter, especially if you’re doing something like going to class or walking to work, but you’ll definitely be able to find shoes with a slight heel that remain seasonally appropriate. This is especially true when it comes to boots and booties. You’ll stay comfortable while also wearing an outfit that’s cute and flattering!

10. Top everything off with a scarf

One of the easiest ways to stay warm and bring your whole outfit together is to wear a scarf. This is great because scarves are perfect for the winter weather and they’re obviously stylish. When all else fails, a scarf is a great way to bring all the different colors and patterns of your layered outfit together.
