20 Signs You Went To Marriotts Ridge High School

Every high school has certain traditions, qualities and experiences that only students can relate to. Here are 20 signs you went to Westfield High School!

Corn and school; the only things in Marriottsville. If you even know what and where it is, you probably went to MRHS. Here are the 20 signs you went to Marriotts Ridge High School!

1. You go all out for spirit day

Everyone’s favorite weeks of school- Spirit week. The best excuse to wear your bright blue feathery boa and cover your face in blue and white paint. With days like Duo Day, Tacky Tuesday, and of course, Class Day, who’s learning in school?

2. Morning traffic jams

There’s only one road to school, and only one way out. There’s also the middle school across the road. So that’s 2 schools worth of buses, parents dropping off the underclassmen who can’t be bothered with a bus, and you: a senior who only wants to get to school with just enough time to get to 1st period. Chances are, you’re getting a lunch detention.

3. Riding bus as a senior

If you were a senior and on the bus, it was super embarrassing. Whether you didn’t have a license or a car, or you just happened liked the bus more, nobody wanted to be that lone senior on the bus.

4. Navy and gray are all you own

It started with the free Freshmen t-shirt, then the hoodie for track practice, then the sweatpants were on sale at the Hitching Post- and suddenly your whole closet was the same dark color.

5. Cows

You’ve seen them. You’ve heard them. And sadly, you’ve smelled them. From the cold bus window at 6:50 in the morning, to the Cow Run with the XC team, if you went to MRHS, you’ve experienced cows.

6. Vera Bradley

You own at least one Vera Bradley item. Whether it’s a lunch bag, a wristlet, or even just a lanyard. Every girl had one, and so did you.

7. Vape Club

Unofficial until 2016, the Vape Club brought you nothing but pain. It started with a warning on the daily announcements, to bathrooms being closed down, to the worst punishment- no break.

8. The rare fights

In 4 years at Marriotts Ridge, I heard of maybe 10 fights total, and only saw 1 in real life. The next day after a fight was always great. Videos and details were exchanged by everybody, sometimes even teachers joining in.

9. You’ve experienced a fire day

A fire day is when someone lights a trashcan on fire in the bathroom early in the day, before class even starts, and the whole school has to stand outside at 7:30 AM in the freezing February weather. That is, until everyone gets moved to Mount View Middle across the street, starting one of the most confusing and hectic experiences ever. There’s also more fire days than snow days.

10. Water fountains suck

The water on the third floor tasted weird, and the water on the second floor was oddly warm. If you forgot to fill up your water bottle during lunch, then you were out of luck until you got home.

11. You never went to any football game

Except the homecoming one. The bleachers were always packed on the Friday night of homecoming week, with students from all 4 grades showing their spirit and support.

12. Awful VPs

They weren’t called vice principals, but administrators, and everyone had their own reason for hating them. There were three of them, and one just happened to be walking down the same hallway you were ditching class in.

13. The ridiculous dress code

One time, you got dress coded for wearing some shorts you thought were semi-short. Your best friend wore shorts a little too short and never got any warning. Was there actually a dress code, or…?

14. The flopped senior pranks

Sadly, the senior pranks were never really cool or funny because all the best ideas got shot down by the administrators every year. Sometimes, especially if it was car related, the local police got involved.

15. Fake vending machines

There were 4 of them in the main hallway right next to the commons, but you never used them because they were never on. If you were still at school past 3PM and they were on, you still didn’t buy any organic snacks because they were waaay overpriced.

16. AP everything

AP week was the worst week for possibly everybody in the school; students and teachers. The teachers hated pushing anybody into taking AP classes just for the sake of it being AP, and students definitely did not want to give up their break and visit teachers instead.

17. ‘Healthy’ cafeteria food

A common public school issue, the bad cafeteria food got even worse when they tried to get healthy. The only really edible things were the fries, and if you didn’t cough up $0.75 more than the usual fee, you only got about 5 of them.

18. Dunkin Donuts is packed starting at 2:10

It’s what happens when the best place 5 minutes away is also the only place 5 minutes away. And that’s driving, not walking. Not only are MRHS students crowding all the seats, but they’re also behind the counter.

19. Graduation at Merriweather

More of a county-wide thing than just MRHS, but the best part of senior year was being able to count down the days you had left in school on one hand. Sure, maybe the 2-hour long rehearsals were a little tedious, but it was worth it to finally being able to wear that navy blue cap and gown.

20. Race to beat the buses

At other schools, student drivers only have to beat their own buses. At Marriotts Ridge, we had to beat both high school and middle school buses. If you didn’t make it out of the parking lot by 2:25, you might as well just wait it out.
