If you struggle with acne, then you know just how frustrating it can be. You spend a ton of money trying every product on the market and yet none of it seems to work. Don’t give up hope just yet, though. There’s still one more thing that you probably haven’t even considered yet – your gut. Now, I know what you may be thinking – how is your acne related to your gut? I used to ask the same thing, but now I’m here to tell you that your gut has everything to do with your acne. Here’s why:
Take a step back from the skincare products and take a minute to think about your diet. What do you eat during the day? What do you drink? If your answer included things like chips, soda, or any other kind of processed foods, you just found your problem. You’d be surprised at just how much a poor diet can affect your skin. That’s why it’s so important, not just for your overall health, but for your skin, to make sure you are eating a healthy, balanced diet and drinking a lot of water.
Is your acne related to your gut just in terms of food? Nope! Water does a lot for our body, aside from just keeping us hydrated. So if you’re not drinking enough water, chances are your body isn’t functioning as well as it could be, which could be playing a role in your acne. Water is essential to maintain skin moisture and deliver essential nutrients to the skin cells. Water also replenishes the skin tissue and increases elasticity, which helps delay signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. While it’s a vital part of clearing your acne, however, don’t think increasing your water intake is the only thing you need to do to clear your acne.
Certain foods that you may be eating raise your blood sugar, and when your blood sugar rises quickly it causes your body to release insulin. Having excess insulin in your blood can cause your oil glands to produce more oil, thus increasing your acne. Some foods that are not so great for your skin include pasta, white rice, white bread, sugar, dairy, and saturated and trans fats. If your diet is made up mostly of those things, try limiting your intake of them by replacing them with foods like whole grains, fruits and vegetables, turkey, fish, nuts, and quinoa. You just might be surprised at how quickly you’ll start to notice a difference in your skin.
It is important to note, however, that while it is always a good idea to improve your diet not just for your skin, but for your overall health, everyone’s body is different and will react differently to different foods. But, if you think your diet is to blame for your acne, talk with your doctor or a dietitian to help figure out what diet would work best for you.
