18 Indie Style Outfit Ideas That Will Keep You Looking Trendy

Indie style is a unique kind of fashion. Indie is short for independent and when it comes to the indie style, it is really about standing out. You are trying to get away from mainstream fashion and finding clothes that aren’t made in factories and sold in the big retail stores.

These indie outfit ideas will definitely give you an idea of how to find your own fashion. That is really what indie style is, finding the style you really feel comfortable in and like. Another part of the indie style that is so great is finding clothing items that are vintage and that were handmade. Definitely hit up some thrift shops to find some of these items. Alright, here are eighteen super cute and trendy indie outfit ideas!

1. Cropped Corduroy Jacket

This outfit idea may not technically be indie style, but the cropped corduroy jacket can be paired with a lot of different clothing items to really fit in with the other indie outfit ideas. I would personally pair this super cute jacket with a white t-shirt or tank top and a flowy floral maxi skirt with some strap sandals.

This tan corduroy jacket would be a great complementary clothing item to a purple top or jewelry for example. Finding the right colors that mix well is important in this style, but again, this style is all about what you like, so really go out and find what really speaks to you.

2. Yellow Ribbed Cropped Sweater

I will say a lot of these outfit ideas resemble the 90s fashion, which I actually really love. This sweater reminds me of the 90s. It works perfectly with that white crop top and the faded blue jeans. Definitely a great spring outfit when the weather starts warming up and those bright colors go great with all of the blooming flowers.

3. Under The Great Wave off Kanagawa T-Shirt

I find this painting so beautiful and I think it makes a great t-shirt. Indie outfit ideas are supposed to be unique, and I think this outfit is definitely unique, especially with the striped black and white shirt underneath and the high waisted darker jeans.

With this outfit, you really want to bring out that blue color, so I suggest wearing jewelry that is similar in color and I would even go as far as to find wave earrings or a wave necklace to go with the shirt.

4. Ripped Jean Shorts

You have to have a pair of jean shorts, and ripped ones at that. Jean shorts go with all kinds of styles, and of course, work really well with indie style outfit ideas. A great way to make this look unique would be to add fishnet leggings or tights underneath the shorts. Through on a rainbow sweater and those combat boots work so well!

5. Doc Marten Combat Boots

So, as you could see with the post before, and a few others in this article, I really like combat boots and think they work so well with any indie outfit ideas. Even this look below, you have a print sweater with an animal print satin mini skirt and then the combat boots. Even though when seen separately, these clothing items don’t seem to go together, they work really well together because they complement each other in different and very unique ways.

Sweaters are literally perfect. They can go with any style and work. They are comfy and warm and they just look so good on. There are so many indie outfit ideas out there that include a sweater. It is unique to wear a sweater with a mini skirt or shorts. Make it your thing. Gold jewelry would complement this sweater really well.

7. Blue Plaid Skirt

Plaid patterns are very interesting. They are very busy and with other patterns added to it can be kind of overwhelming. Well, as the indie style is very different, plaid might just work with another pattern that isn’t as busy as plaid is. Find a good pattern that complements the plaid and make a very unique and fun outfit.

8. Blue Fabric Shorts

These fabric shorts are super cute. The ones in the photo below have more of that 90s pleated look to them, but I could not find them anywhere. The shorts I did find do have a ribbon to tie around the waist which I think is super cute. This baggy look is very comfortable and creates a super cute indie look.

9. Black Knit Crop Tank Top

This is another outfit that reminds me of the 90s. The pleated patterned pants and the longer coat create a professional feel to the look, but then you have that crop top and those chain necklaces which creates a entirely different feel. Very unique and very indie style.

10. Butterfly Jeans

This look just screams indie to me. I mean, you don’t see a lot of butterfly jeans. And that beautiful cardigan just really ties the whole outfit together. She even has her hair dyed. The burst of color and different patterns creates that unique look that is very indie style.

11. Crop Button-Up Sweater

Crop sweaters are just as amazing as regular sweaters! They also can be apart of all indie outfit ideas. This one especially as it creates that looser look and complements that busy pattern of the skirt it is paired with. This sweater would work great with any kind of bottoms, and you could even wear it over a dress if you wanted to.

12. Green Velvet Tank Top

Tank tops or spaghetti strapped dresses over t-shirts are not very popular. At least I do not see a lot of outfits like this. There is another one in this article, but I will go over that later. I think I would wear this look with some high waisted jeans and a big button-up sweater for the fall times as that lime green would very much stand out from all of the fall colors.

13. Green Rolled-Up Shorts

Researching the indie style, I found a lot of outfit ideas like this one. That is to say, they were all different in their own way, but they were very similar to this one. I like the baggy look and the pleated shorts with that plaid coat feels very 90s to me. That splash of pink in the necklace is perfect to bring a little color to the outfit but still keep it pretty neutral.

14. Striped Tank Top

Here is another tank top over the t-shirt look. I think it is so adorable and unique. A great way to make outfit ideas like this even more different is to wear a t-shirt with print on it with a striped tank top like this. Maybe a print that isn’t too busy as not to overwhelm, but complements the bright stripes.

15. Leopard Print Dress

Animal print is kind of becoming popular again, but nearly as much as you might think. Indie outfit ideas are supposed to be different from the mainstream, but you can also take a piece of clothing that might be mainstream and pair with other clothing items to make it different.

Another way to make a dress like this more unique would be to maybe cut it short or sew a design in it. Make these kinds of mainstream clothing items a DIY project while also making them lean more towards that indie fashion style.

16. Striped Crop Top

With crop top outfit ideas, a great way to make your outfit less mainstream would be to go to a thrift store, find a bunch of shirts you like, and cutting them yourselves to make the crop top. You can, of course, buy crop tops like this, but it would make it a lot more you if you were to create the top yourself. This shirt works so great with jeans, however, you can also pair this top with a cute black pencil skirt or some waist-high cut off shorts.

17. Orange Plaid Shirt

Talk about the 90s, a plaid shirt screams the decade. This orange plaid shirt is perfect to wear over super cool and unique t-shirts. I would wear this plaid shirt over an earthy green dress and some black or maroon combat boots. It kind of turns the outfit into a grunge look, but grunge is kind of indie as it is a very unique style.

You don’t see a lot of corduroy pants being worn nowadays, but I think they are super cute and paired with the right things, can make some really great indie outfit ideas. These yellow corduroy pants are high risers. I would wear super cool sneakers and unique long socks with them to really make the outfit unique. Just have fun with them, they make for a very different look.
