How young is too young to teach our kids about guns? Sadly, Kids and guns has become a horrifyingly frequent subject to discuss because of all the mass school shootings that occur way too often in our society. The times we live in now are so vastly different and scary than how times were when we 80’s babies were growing up. We were free to be kids and not have a great fear or worry about going to school and possibly not making it back home.
Today’s kids however, and their parents, are faced with that fear and worry every single day because it is all too easy for anybody and I mean literally anybody, to get a gun, go to a school and open fire on the innocent students.
So, given all that is occurring in our society today, what age is too young to start teaching our kids about guns?
I saw a video on Facebook the other day where a father had his 9-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter, at a gun range shooting guns. The comments on the video were compromised of people agreeing that given the times, what he was doing was right; while others were arguing how they are way too young and should enjoy being kids.
Here’s the thing though, the society we live in today makes it extremely tough for kids to just be kids. There is literally a school shooting every other week! And the NRA has yet to announce any real plans that they are putting in place to drastically change the seemingly easy process for someone to obtain a gun.
Things are so incredibly bad in our world now, that kids of all different ethnicities and religions from across the country, banned together and organized the #MarchForOurLives movement.
The purpose of the movement is to showcase how enough is beyond enough of these mass shooting that happen in not just schools, but also in churches, movie theaters and airports.
In my opinion, I feel that we must teach our young kids about guns. I would say that the age of teaching them, should start around 5 or 7. Yes, that is incredibly young but incredibly young children are dying simply from attending school. Our kids today, unfortunately, need to at least know what a gunshot sounds like so if they hear one, they know to run to safety as quickly as they can.
We are living in very terrifying times, so we must prepare our kids accordingly!
