For the most part, we all know our zodiac signs. Whether you barely pay attention to that fact that you’re a Taurus or you read your horoscope every day, you at least know what your star sign is, but the complexity of your zodiac-influenced personality extends far beyond this one sign. If you’re not deeply entrenched in astrology, you probably don’t know that you also have a moon sign, bringing a whole extra load of intricacies into the mix. But hey, would it really be a true personality if things didn’t get complicated? So, here’s how to find out your moon sign!
The zodiac sign most people consider themselves to fall under is their star sign or sun sign (same thing, different names), which is in reference to what position the sun was in at their time of birth. We correlate that with the day of the year on which we were born. I was born on October 11th, so I’m a Libra. But there’s another layer to the puzzle that is your astrological identity: your moon sign.
Astrological believers say that while your sun sign determines your outer personality, your moon sign decides your deeper inner emotions and needs. The signs work together to make up your full, complex identity. Of course, astrology is all based on to what extent you believe in it. But if you’ve never felt complete and fully connected to your star sign, it could be because you’ve been missing the account of your moon sign and how that influences you as well, internally and subconsciously.
While the information your moon sign brings is highly complicated, calculating it is fairly simple. Your moon sign is determined by what phase the moon was in at the exact time of your birth. You’re supposed to know the precise time of day, but if you don’t have that information you can kind of fudge the results by guessing close. If you have no idea, tests suggest calculating the moon sign for those born earlier in that day and later. If the sign is the same throughout the day, then that’s your sign regardless of what time you were born. If they’re different, look at the description of each and decide which suits you best. It’s important to know both signs because not only do they each contribute to your emotional make-up, they also influence one another. If you have the same sign in both situations, then you’ll have little to no conflict between your two sides, as they’ll work within the same parameters. However, your faults associated with that sign may appear doubled, without any other sign to balance them out. If you have two different signs, they can conflict and influence one another on three levels: modalities (cardinal, fixed, or mutable), gender (masculine and feminine), and elements (earth, air, water, and fire). I won’t go into what each of these means here but know they each affect the relationship between your sun and moon sign.
For instance, if you have Aries as your sun sign and Scorpio as your moon sign, you’re working with a fire sign and a water sign. While you’re probably likely ignited into action by your fire sign, your more sensitive water sign is always there to help cool things off and put forth more patience. These two opposite elements can work together to help you find inner peace.
