How To Be Successful In College: A Guide To Staying On Track

Whether you’re starting college or are just stuck trying to get your grades up, it’s important to know some tips on how to be successful in college. Listen to yourself and follow these tips to improve your college life. Just remember to stay calm when you’re stressed and leave time to have fun.

1. Get A Planner

Electronic or physical, having a planner will help you become successful in college. Write down all the projects, exams, quizzes, and outside of school activities, you need to do. We’ve all probably done the “I don’t need to write it down, I’ll remember it” move and then have it turn out that we actually forget what we had to do. Having a planner will remind you what you have to do and you’ll be able to create a schedule. If you’re using an electronic planner, take advantage of using notifications.

2. Your Friends Are There

This is really important to remember to be successful in college because friends are the most helpful people. If your friends are true, they will definitely be there to help you with school work or some mental issue that might be going on for you. Hang together at the school library and quiz each other for your upcoming exams.

3. Physical And Mental Health Checkups

This is a really important tip to use because your physical and mental health are going to either help you or make it very difficult to be successful in college. With your physical health, you want to make sure you’re staying active and eating healthy. If you feel like your mental health is low then it is important to take a break from your studies and figure out what’s wrong.

4. Breaks

Studying hard is important but studying too hard and for too long might actually be what’s stopping you from being successful in college. If you’re cramming for exam week and have multiple exams to study for, make a plan where you’re able to study for an hour then take a 15-20 minute break. Your brain will thank you for giving it breaks.

5. Listen To Yourself

If you feel like your body is telling you that you need a break, do it. Making sure you’re healthy and putting yourself first, is more important than cramming in that last project. If you’re tired and feel like you might pass out, then that means you need some sleep, no questions asked. Keeping happy and healthy will help you become super successful in college.

6. Journal

One way to start to understand how you’re feeling is to keep a journal. You can try and make it a daily one but if you already have a pile of things to do, you can try and write in it once a week. When you take some time to write down your thoughts, you’ll be able to understand something you didn’t know was going on internally.

7. Remember The Basics

Studying is hard but remembering to eat food and have water and sleep can be even harder when you’re stressed. Put up sticky notes reminding you to do these things because doing these basic things are going to also help keep you healthy and increase your success. Have 8 glasses of water a day and 3 meals. Throughout the day scatter in some snacks and then end your day with sleep at a decent time.

It’s really important to make sure you’re healthy if you want to be successful in college. An unhealthy body is a sad body which makes a sad human which makes more study skills. College can create a lot of mental health issues for some people, and if you feel like you need help right now get in contact with your school counselor or check out one of the helplines here.
