How I Got Through My Transition Into College

The transition from high school to college is one of those things you either think about and get really, super excited about, or have an anxiety attack every time it crosses your mind. In most cases, it’s a natural and healthy mixture of both. For those of you who are getting ready to make the transition into college, I offer you my experience of going from a high school student surrounded by friends and familiarity to a freshman in college surrounded by newness and a bunch of complete strangers.

Although I was nervous at first, I quickly realized that if I wanted to go out and experience all my college had to offer, and if I wanted to get the best out of my freshman year, I was just going to have to put myself out there. Here is what I learned that stayed with me throughout the next years at University of Washington, and will hopefully help you out, too!

1. Don’t be nervous. We all want to have that #IDC attitude, but making the transition into college can make it tough. However, if you just put away the worries and the what ifs, you’ll be making friends in no time and really feel at home on your new campus.

2. It’s hard. But, it’s going to be fine. It’s not going to be easy, but I promise you it’s going to be worth it. Make the most out of the time you are given. You only get this chance once, which brings me to my last point.

3. Just go for it! This is a perfect time to really test yourself and see what you are made of. What can you do when you are 100% yourself and just put yourself out there? I’d be lying if I said it was all sunshine and daisies, but college is the time to really shine as who you are and what you want to do with your life. So, go get ’em!
