We may be enjoying our summer right now, but before you know it, we’ll be back to the monotony of school, university or work and dreaming forward to our next break.
While the weather would hardly permit us to go back to sunbathing on a picturesque beach somewhere, that doesn’t mean to say that we can’t make the most of our Autumn. This season boasts its own quirks; a beautiful palette of rich yellow, brown and beige to gawk at, an aesthetic feeling of treading on crispy leaves while sipping on a Pumpkin Spice Latte, and an excuse to go crazy in re-fashioning your autumn wardrobe (it is one of the best seasons for fashion!).
You don’t need to travel too far afield – and so here’s my favourite places to go for fall break (in the UK), just in case you’re thinking about it already!
There is no better time to come to Blackpool than in Autumn. This is due to its famous illuminations spectacle it holds every year (this year it’s 30th August to 3rd November), which is essentially a 10 kilometre long light festival that’s been running for over 100 years! There you will see every kind of light display imaginable: lasers, neon, light bulbs, fibre optics, searchlights and floodlighting. With over 500 gorgeous designs and features created by these lights, it gives such a seasonal feel to it – maybe even exciting an early Christmas spirit.
As this time of the year attracts lots of tourism, you can expect far more attractions and entertainment on offer than you would find at other times of the year, including a mass range of shows on piers and plenty of theatre performances on. With the Blackpool Tower, Pleasure Beach and a handful of attractions and museums to visit, you will never be stuck for anything to do here.
This is a perfect escape from the usual busy atmosphere you’re probably tired of. Haworth has retained its peaceful and relaxing vibe that is has long been famous for. There are a multitude of gorgeous cottages to rent out (try AirBnB for some amazingly great prices!) where you can cosy up on the chillier nights with a hot drink around a beautifully lit fire.
In the central village you’ll find a large range of cute and scenic cafes, Victorian style shops, plenty of welcoming and relaxing pubs, an old-fashioned steam train to have a ride on, and the Brontë Parsonage Museum if you fancy a trip down the literary lane (I always do!). However, the best quality about Haworth is it’s connection to the stunning Yorkshire Moors that interlink with the Pennines. Its views in the Autumn are a must-see for any walk/view lover – think of that colourful palette of Autumn colours spread over its already scenic landscape. You’ll be able to find guides showing plenty of routes for the best views (both easy and more strenuous walking) online and in Haworth itself.
You can never go wrong with a trip to London. Even if you’ve been before, there’s still probably a multitude of things you still haven’t seen. Escape the chillier days and nights by visiting (or re-visiting) all of the free museums and attractions on offer here; for example, Tate Modern, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, National Portrait Gallery and The Tower of London (this one isn’t free but it is definitely worth the visit).
So what makes London one of the best places to go for fall break? Hyde Park is definitely a contender. Soak in the Autumn aesthetic with a crisp walk (and perhaps a warm coffee?) down one of the country’s most famous and beautiful grounds. More of a shopping person? There’s no better place to shop than in the capital – with countless stores, both designer and budget, take advantage of a trip to London by revamping your Autumn style and getting into the season with all the latest fashion trends.
This is a perfect Autumn break for architecture and history lovers alike. At the centre of Salisbury you have Britain’s finest medieval cathedral, containing the best preserved original 1215 Magna Carta. Book a Tower Tour and you’ll be rewarding with spectacular autumnal views of the entire city. Salisbury itself is a go-to place for chilled out pubs, quirky markets and gorgeous parks and lakes – you can’t really go wrong!
Why not use your break to tick off a famous ancient monument? A trip to Salisbury MUST mean a trip to the Stonehenge. Marvel in both the Salisbury and National Trust museums for fascinating findings and in depth information (including creepy theories) about the historical site, before actually seeing the monument for real. It’s far more stunning in real life; plus the windy climates in Autumn will give you an even eerier feel!
