Maybe you’ve just gotten out of a high school relationship or maybe you’ve never dated anyone in your life. Maybe you’re desperate for a significant other, or maybe you’re content to be on your own. Regardless of your situation, being single can be an excellent opportunity to get to know yourself, meet new people, and be adventurous. Don’t take the single life for granted because honestly, you have your entire life to be in a relationship. Here are 5 ways to embrace being single at Virginia Tech!
Join a new club. Take a fitness class at McComas (Free week of fitness is your friend, kids). Go to a party with your friends. Say yes to an adventure you wouldn’t normally take. There’s so many opportunities to try new things here at Virginia Tech, might as well make use of them!
One great thing about being single is that you can date around, meet new people, and try new things. If you’re interested in hookups, a dating app might be the right choice for you. If that’s not your thing, there’s plenty of other ways to meet new people. Start by sitting next to that cutie you’ve been checking out in your poly-sci class. College is a unique setting where you’re constantly meeting new people. Embrace it and make use of it!
There’s so many things to do on the weekends here in Blacksburg. There’s the Farmers Market, countless hiking trails, different art installations at Moss Arts, and not to mention football. As for the evenings, if drinking isn’t your thing, gather some friends and go to a movie at the Lyric or catch a concert one evening at Gillie’s. If partying is your thing, do it honey. Do it big.
You’re stuck with yourself for the rest of your life, might as well spend some time getting to know yourself. Take time to be alone, whether that’s a solo trip to the Farmer’s Market downtown one Saturday morning, sitting at Mill Mountain studying for a few hours, or even just your morning workout.
When you’re in a relationship, it’s easy to forget your friendships. Your significant other tends to become your number one confidante and the first one you go to when you want to hang. So take this time to focus on friendships, both old and new.
Honestly, being single at Virginia Tech and in general, isn’t that difficult. It can be a little disheartening at times, but in the end, it’s just a part of life. Keep swiping right on Tinder and keep smiling a little extra at that cute West End employee. Looking for your person can be stressful, so don’t sweat it and let life take the lead. If you’re doing what you love and working on making yourself a better person, the right person will come along with it. Enjoy the single life while it lasts!
