Free Museums To Check Out While You’re On The East Coast

Free museums are the best museums. Smithsonian museums are an abundant supply of free. There are niche museums throughout the coast, but we’re going to take a look at some of the major museums that you’ll want to go to. Everyone should dive into educating themselves on multiple cultures and varying types of art. These museums are a great place to start.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

The museum’s website states that it is “open every day except Yom Kippur and Christmas Day.” People who go often say that it has a profound impact on their life, putting into perspective the events that occurred.

living memorial to the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum inspires citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity…With unique power and authenticity, the Museum teaches millions of people each year about the dangers of unchecked hatred and the need to prevent genocide.(Holocaust Memorial Museum)

National Archives Museum

You’re not allowed to take photographs of the historical documents due to them being very fragile to light. This museum contains the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the U.S.A., and the Bill of Rights. Bring a sweater: it needs to be cold to preserve documents.

National Museum Of The American Indian

Since the passage of its enabling legislation…the NMAI has been steadfastly committed to bringing Native voices to what the museum writes and presents, whether on-site at one of the three NMAI venues, through the museum’s publications, or via the Internet. The NMAI is also dedicated to acting as a resource for the hemisphere’s Native communities and to serving the greater public as an honest and thoughtful conduit to Native cultures—present and past—in all their richness, depth, and diversity. Tibet House

Since the Chinese “Incorporation” of Tibet, the Dalai Lama has established a museum in regards to Tibetan culture.

Tibet House US is dedicated to preserving Tibet’s unique culture at a time when it is confronted with extinction on its own soil. By presenting Tibetan civilization and its profound wisdom, beauty, and special art of freedom to the people of the world, we hope to inspire others to join the effort to protect and save it. Baltimore Museum of Art

An upcoming exhibition is the Generations: A History of Black Abstract Art, with “more than 80” pieces of art.

The BMA is regularly open 10am-5pm, Wednesday through Sunday. The BMA Sculpture Garden is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to dusk unless the temperature is 94 degrees or higher, or 40 degrees or lower. (BMA)

Cornell Fine Arts Museum

Some of their upcoming exhibitions are African American Art in the 20th Century and At Leisure: Images of Repose from the Permanent Collection. The museum states that it is “[o]pen to the public year-round, its holdings include the only European Old Master paintings in the Orlando area, a sizeable American art collection, and a forward-thinking contemporary collection on view both at the Museum and The Alfond Inn at Rollins.”
