DIY Halloween Costumes

Halloween is upon us, which means it time for tricks, treats, and costumes! Halloween is the one time of year you can be anything you want, whether it’s a superhero, your favorite celebrity, even inanimate objects or food. But sometimes it can be a little expensive buying costumes for Halloween, and they might not fit into a college students budget. A simple solution would just be to make your own costume. My friends and I in college always pretty much always made our own costumes, and it was way cheaper than buying one. But it can sometimes be hard to come up with ideas, so here’s a list to help get your creative juices flowing.

1. M+M’s

I have actually done this myself. Make a t-shirt, print out the M (we made ours out of felt), and that’s it! Good prop-bags of M+M’s.

2. Barbie

A friend of mine made this costume once (not the one above), and it’s awesome. I got the feeling it’s a little time-consuming, so beware.

3. Rock, Paper, Scissors

A cute costume for you and two friends. It helps if you’re crafty.

4. Golddigger

Dress up in all gold, wear some bling (real or fake), and carry around a shovel. Perfect!

5. Pop Art/Comic

Don’t forget to attach a thought bubble to your head!

6. Toddlers and Tiaras

This is a costume of mine. Buy some tutus, sashes, and tiaras. The pacifiers are optional, but get the Toddler part across.

7. iPhone 5

A giant cardboard box and you can paint the phone on it or print it out. Just make sure to update it to the iPhone 6 or 6+.

8. Johnny Depp Characters

I think this might be one of the best costumes I’ve seen. Dress up as your favorite Johnny Depp character. This costume is great because you can use it with a small or large group of people.

9. Troll face

U mad bro?

10. Sauce Packets

Here’s a popular idea on Pinterest. Dress up as the sauce packets from Taco Bell, which is a cute group costume.

You could also put a frame around your head and be a self-portrait, tape Smarties (the candy) to your pants and wear glasses to be a smarty-pants, make t-shirts with the days of the week on them in different colors (like Wasted Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday, etc.), wear a diaper and blue crop top for Tommy Pickles, and more. There are so many DIY Halloween costumes ideas out there, there’s no need to pay $40 for one.
