We’ve all been there: you’re on a dating app, you’ve just matched with a cutie you’re interested in, but you have no idea what to send them. Dating app openers can make or break a conversation so it’s important you choose the right one for each situation. Luckily, some of us have been around that block a few times, so there are a few dating app openers that are more likely than others to get a response.
Ultimately, though, if you’re really not comfortable sending a certain message, you’re probably better off not sending that message even if you think it’ll get a response. Good luck out there, and stay safe!
Everyone knows these by heart, let’s be real, so at this point, they’re more of a humorous opening line than anything else, but it’s still fun. “Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?” “Are you tired? Because you’ve been running through my mind all day/night.” “Are we in class together? Because we’ve got chemistry.” “Is there a bonfire nearby? Because I’m seeing sparks.” “My name is (insert name here), but you can call me any time.”
This is also a fantastic ice-breaker. You definitely get to know a person by their answers to random questions like: “What would be your role in a post-apocalyptic role?” “What would be your lame superpower if you could choose one?” “Which Disney sidekick would be your choice for a karaoke partner?” “What fictional school would you choose to attend?” “Sort yourself into a Hogwarts house/Game of Thrones family/Divergent faction/etc.”
There’s also always the classic “Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses?” Whatever question you use, be sure to have your own answer ready for when they turn the tables on you.
This is a great way to show that you paid attention to their profile. Comment on one of their photos or on a detail in their bio, either by asking a question or complimenting them or pointing out something interesting. If nothing else feels right to you, know that people tend to respond to a compliment, and even just a one-word answer can be a start to a back and forth dialogue. This is a simple way to start up a conversation, and it’s a pretty foolproof one at that.
Animals are a great way to start a conversation, and if you use a gif, you won’t need to think of a line or an opening message, because the gif will say it all for you. Animal gifs are adorable and there are so many out there to choose from.
It’s also a pretty high guarantee of a response and a smile from the other person. I mean, just look at this quokka gif! Doesn’t it make you smile? Wouldn’t you respond to someone who sent it to you?
Most people like to talk about themselves and their lives and experiences. Ask them about what they’ve done in their life and what they’d like to do. Ask about their interests, hobbies, skills, pets, likes, dislikes, etc.
Plus, these types of dating app openers often lead to the other person asking about you, which starts up a conversation, especially if you follow up with more questions about their answers. It shows them that you’re interested in what they have to say and in them.
