7 D.I.Y. Decorations You Can Make For Your Next Party

When it comes to throwing a party, the decorations are one of the most important things to get right! You want your party décor to be fun and set the right mood for your guests. However, decorations can be expensive, and a lot of the ones you can find in the store or online are a bit tacky…

In order to save money and throw a unique party, here are some beautiful and easy decorations that you can make all by yourself!

1. Confetti Garland

This is a super simple and easy party decoration idea, and it adds so much color and pizzazz to a room! You only need a few things to get started:

  • Needle
  • Thin string/thread
  • Colorful construction paper
  • Circle paper punch

It’s worth noting that while a medium-sized circular paper puncher is recommended for this D.I.Y., you can use any shape or puncher you’d like! You definitely can customize this one to fit your preference.

Start by using your paper puncher to punch out a lot of circles from your construction paper. The more colors you use, the more fun your final garland will be! So definitely choose some good colors for your paper.

Once you have a bunch of circles, thread your string through your needle and start stringing on the circles. Your string should be as long as you want your garland to be. You can position the circles however you’d like on the string, and then you have this pretty decoration that’s perfect for any kind of party!

2. Tissue Paper Flowers

These beautiful flowers can be made in many different sizes, and the more you make, the more beauty you add to your party! Here are the supplies you will need:

  • 15 sheets of tissue paper
  • Thin piece of wire or strong string
  • Scissors

The larger your sheets of tissue paper are, the large the flower will be! If you want big ones to hang from the ceiling, definitely use big pieces.

Start by layering all 15 sheets together; then, fold it into an accordion-like style with each fold being about 1-2 inches. You can then cut the edges into a shape (rounded, pointed, etc.). Now tie your string or wire right in the middle of the accordion, and then bring both ends all the way around to meet each other so that if forms a circle.

Now you can flare out all the tissue paper layers, and it will create a big, full flower!

3. Paper Bag Stars

This party decoration hack is also super easy and doesn’t take much time to make! Here’s what you need:

  • Paper bags (brown or white)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue
  • Hole punch (optional)

In order to make one star, you need 7 bags. Start by cutting each bag in the pattern; you can do hole punches for extra decoration or cut the tips of the bags in a triangle, for example. It’s sort of like making paper snowflakes!

Once you’ve cut and decorated each bag identically, lay them flat on a hard surface. Use your hot glue to place an upside down ‘T’ on one of them (starting from the top and going down to the bottom), and then lay another bag down directly on top of that.

Keep repeating this pattern until all 7 bags have been used, and then bring the ends around to meet each other so that the bags form a star/circle. Hot glue the end bags together and you’ve got a unique, gorgeous paper star to hang up!

4. Mini Balloon Placeholders

If you’re having a dinner party or birthday party, try making these fun placeholders for your guests! You simply need some small balloons, string, and pieces of paper to write people’s names on. First, fill the balloons up with a little helium; remember, keep them small! Now tie a little piece of string to the balloon and connect it to the slip of paper with your guest’s name.

This cute decoration will add to your table spread and make everyone at your party feel special and welcomed!

5. Streamer Backdrop

If you’re looking for a way to spruce up a blank wall at your next party, here’s a great decoration idea to give your space some extra flair! You’ll need these supplies:

  • Streamers (crepe paper, colors of your choice)
  • Scissors
  • 2 removable wall hooks
  • 2-meter wooden dowel (or similar rod)

Begin by placing your removable hooks high up on your desired wall; make sure that the wooden dowel fits between the two and that you can rest each end on a hook. Once you have your hooks on your rod up on the wall, start cutting your streamers into long pieces.

Hang the streamer over the wooden dowel; you don’t need to tape them (unless you want to). They can simple hang halfway over the rod on both sides, which will actually make your streamer wall look fuller! Now you have a beautiful backdrop that you can add to any spot at your party.

6. Paint Chip Garland

This simple garland hack will guarantee you a beautiful, rainbow-colored party decoration for any occasion! You only need a large amount of paint sample chips from a local store (for example, Lowes), some scissors, and a stapler.

When you have all your paint chips, start by cutting them in half so that the side with the words are discarded. Then, begin to link each strip together by curling them into circles and stapling the end together. You’ll be left with a chain link garland that’s fun, colorful, unique, and so easy!

7. Hula Hoop Photo Booth Prop

If you’re planning on having a photo booth at your party, or simply want a fun prop for photo opts, you need to try this D.I.Y. decoration! You should start with a hula hoop, and if you don’t like the pattern or color of it, I would recommend spray painting it your desired color.

You can now start either tying, taping, or hot-gluing different items to the hula hoop! Usually balloons, flowers (regular, fake, or see #2 on this list!), and other fun decoration items are used for this. Now you have a fun and unique photo frame for your friends to take great party pictures with!
