As university students, we are probably struggling with saving money because we need to pay our tuition but also go out and have a life outside of school. The costs of books, rent, food, dates, and commuting all adds up. Here is a list of 10 free things to do around the University of Toronto that can relieve your crying wallet.

1. Brighten up at Distillery District.

“Come out of the dark and into the light.” Light up your night and unleash your inner hipster. See our city’s very first light festival at Distillery District from sundown until March 27th.

2. #TOIceBreakers

Don’t be afraid of the cold and explore the Waterfront! Ice Breakers features 5 public art installations along Toronto’s Waterfront from Yonge to Bathurst. In a world that needs a little more love, let the art bring people together.

3. Discover the Royal Ontario Museum.

The ROM offers free admission to post secondary students on Tuesdays with valid student ID. Take a stroll through art and culture. The exhibits and galleries are aesthetically pleasing for those Instagram feeds too.

4. See the Winter Waterfront art installations.

Checkout the 8 public art installations by winners of the 2016 Winter Stations Design Competition while enjoying the beach and cold air. One of the installations is a Japanese hot spring to warm up your feet by the beach. One of the installations is designed by students from U of T! These Winter Stations will begin from Feb 20th to March 27th.

5. Go to a free music concert, courtesy of the Faculty of Music.

Grab a friend who loves music and enjoy shows ranging from the Hart House Chamber Strings orchestra to jazz ensembles and operas. See the calendar here.

6. Bring your skates!

Bring your own skates and take a glide at an outdoor skating rink! Skate in front of the iconic Toronto sign at Nathan Phillips Square or have a skate party by the lakefront in the Natrel rink at Harbourfront Centre.

7. Visit the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Explore your artsy side and visit the AGO on a Wednesday starry starry night from 6pm – 9pm for free admission! They are currently exhibiting “Mystical Landscapes: Masterpieces from Monet, Van Gogh and more.” How could anyone miss a chance to see Van Gogh’s Starry Night? Let the art dig deep into your soul.

8. Get your cheer on at a Varsity Blues game.
