15 Trends That Should NEVER Make A Comeback

Fashion, just like history, tends to repeat itself. There are timeless fashion trends that are true classics such as the little black dress and nude heels, and then there are fashion trends that should never last more than a summer fling. Here are a few fashion trends that should never make a comeback!

1. Low-rise jeans

Though there is nothing wrong with a classy mid-rise, low-rise jeans should never ever come back from their shameful past. You know, the type that was just right above one’s underwear. Unless your name starts with Britney and ends with Spears, you should really think twice before wearing that ghost of the ’90s.

2. Neon

Anything that can glow in a bowling alley (except for white, of course) has got to go. Neon colors had a pretty long run; however, it is time for us to forever retire those embarrassingly brights colors.

3. The mullet

Guys, this one is for you. The mullet, just like the ’80s, is long gone. There is no reason for you to rock it unless you are getting ready for a Halloween party. Deal?

4. Visible underwear

Whether it’s a thong or boxers, there is no reason to flash a bunch of strangers. This late ’90s-’00s trend was once the hottest look, however, thankfully, a lot has changed since.

5. Denim vests

Denim vests were a trend that even I used to adore… As painful it is, sometimes we have to say goodbye even to denim vests. Though denim jackets are universal and timeless, denim vests just don’t deserve that kind of privilege.

6. Peep toes

Peep toes had a pretty long run. They were a famous Gossip Girl staple, and Christian Louboutin deserves all the credits. However, peep-toe heels just no longer look as fresh and sexy as they did years ago. Now, they either look tacky or like you are on your way to a vintage party. Let’s keep our peep-toes for vintage-themed parties only!

7. Shoulder pads

In the ’80s shoulder pads, and Ronald Regan, were all the rage (I’m quoting Carrie Bradshaw from The Carrie Diaries if you can’t tell). Though I can totally see how shoulder pads empowered and gave confidence to women, in 2020, we already know that women no longer have to look masculine to be powerful and strong. As totally hot shoulder pads were, there are fresher trends out there for the boss girls to love!

8. Metallic

Metallic clothing is strictly reserved for Halloween apparel only. Though it does look unique and sexy, there is just no reason to look like you are wrapped in tin foil. Metallic clothing had its moment in the ’80s; however, it is time for us to say goodbye!

9. Zebra prints

Okay, did you have zebra bed sheets? If yes, then this print haunts you forever. However, it doesn’t only stop there. Zebra leggings, t-shirts, and accessories. Ah, what a time! Though animal prints such as cheetah are still going strong, zebra print just doesn’t look as fresh. To be frank, zebra prints should be buried under our One Direction posters.

10. Dresses over jeans

Wearing dresses over jeans at some point was the most stylish look out there. Everyone from Disney stars to the Kardashians themselves wore dresses over jeans at some point. And let’s be honest, if you were born anywhere between the late ’90s and very early 2000s, you are guilty of the same crime. I think we are all happy to see this trend to be gone for good. After all, if you feel like your dress is too short, rock a pair of classy black tights underneath to be safe!

11. Jelly sandals

Are you feeling those angry 90s grunge vibes? Because I am. Forever 21 tried hard to bring back jelly sandals and all the sass that come with them. Though they are for sure unique, jelly sandals belong in the punk 90s along with Nirvana posters. Though bands like Nirvana are timeless, jelly sandals for sure are not. Forever 21, don’t try that again!

12. Loose-fitting jeans

Loose-fitting jeans have had their time; however, this trend definitely does not need a comeback. After all, is loose-fitting denim even comfortable?

13. Silk dresses

And we are back to the ’90s! Silky dresses with chokers just scream grunge. Though those dresses are somewhat cute most of them look like nightgowns that Blair Waldorf wore to bed. There are other ways to incorporate pajamas into your casual wardrobe!

14. Popped collars

Popper collar, when wearing a polo shirt, just makes me think of an extremely bratty guy who is about to tell you that his daddy is going to sue you. All jokes aside, it’s 2020, and the movie American Pie is considered a throwback, which is also where popped collars belong.

15. Spider-web chokers

Though there are so many chokers now that are absolutely adorable, those plastic spider-we chokers are just not one of them. They made a comeback in 2014-2016 when Tumblr was the trendiest and yet exclusive social platform to be on. From Nirvana to Lana Del Rey, we were all trying to get that grunge gothic look back. However, the real ’90s just can’t be brought back, so let’s put away those uncomfortable plastic chokers.

Though it can be funny and nostalgic to look back at old trends, all jokes aside, you should always wear whatever you feel most confident and yourself in. Don’t let other people and social media control the way you express yourself. Personally,  consider fashion and style the most significant form of self-expression. What you wear affects your mood, confidence, and even performance, therefore always rock whatever YOU like. Life is too short to wear boring outfits, am I right? Trends may come and go. However, your style doesn’t have to change with them. Be bold, confident, and yourself.
