15 Ways To Transition Your Summer Pieces Into Your Fall Wardrobe

It's time for pumpkin everything, sweater weather and boot season. Here are 15 easy ways to transition your summer pieces into your fall wardrobe!

Scary movies, bonfires, Halloween, and all things pumpkin spiced: what’s not to love about fall? It’s the best season of the year, and not only due to the high volume of tasty Starbucks drinks and fun football games, but also the fashion. But what about that awkward gap between summer and fall, when it’s too late to be out in shorts and a crop top, but also too soon for a full on sweater ensemble? Here are 15 ways to transition your summer pieces into your fall wardrobe!

1. Slide into some tights

This may be one of the most basic tips on the list, but a good pair of tights can breathe fall life into any outfit. You could go with your basic black tights or really take a fashion risk with other fun colors and patterns. Wear them under a dress, skirt, or even shorts.

2. Slip on a pair of tall socks

Tall socks are an absolute must have for the fall season. They’re versatile and can be worn in a variety of ways; with a sweater dress and boots or shorts and sneakers. You can find these guys practically anywhere.

3. Toss on a cardigan

For days where it’s too hot to wear a full blown coat, opt for an easy cardigan. They come in all shapes and sizes. You could go with a slouchy cardigan that hangs off your shoulders or a long, ankle grazing number. Wear it with your favorite summer tank and a pair of jeans or denim shorts to serve some serious autumn looks.

4. Cozy up to a scarf

Dainty summer chokers and necklaces are adorable, but they’re useless when it comes to keeping you warm on those chilly September evenings. Stay cozy and cool with fall’s accessory staple: a scarf! They come in a number of different styles and can be worn in an infinite amount of ways.

5. Suit up with a jacket

For colder days when a cardigan won’t cut it, jackets are an obvious go-to. Denim jackets have proved to be incredibly on trend lately, but if you need something thicker, leather is another badass option. You can go with an edgy all black look or just throw a simple white tee under it.

6. Put a comfy sweater over your favorite summer dress

You know that one perfect, breezy dress you’ve worn all summer long? Don’t part with it yet! It totally has a place in your fall wardrobe. Just layer a basic sweater over it!

7. Opt for boots instead of sandals

Autumn’s number one shoe of choice would probably be boots and booties. They’re comfortable, keep your feet toasty if need be, and go with practically any outfit imaginable. You could slide on some heeled booties with a cute dress or go for a daring pair of thigh high boots and an oversized sweater.

8. Layer tops under strappy dresses

This is yet another 90’s trend that has sprung back to life and it’s not going anywhere (and for good reason). You could go for a plain white tee, a striped long sleeve top, or even a form fitting bodysuit thrown under a spaghetti strap dress and be out the door. Along with that, transform any summer camisoles you’re not ready to stow away and wear it over a tee with some jeans.

9. Top off with a beanie or hat

Capping off an outfit with a wide brimmed hat or a slouchy beanie instantly gives major fall vibes. Also, they’re perfect for bad hair days or days when you don’t feel like dealing with your hair at all!

10. Throw on a flannel

Flannels aren’t just for scarecrows! Tie one around your waist with shorts and a tee or wear it oversized with some leggings. While you can find flannels literally anywhere, thrift stores carry an army of them, and at ridiculously low prices, too.

11. Pair overalls with a sweater underneath

Overalls were huge this summer, whether that was at music festivals or simply for everyday wear. To keep them from collecting dust in your closet this fall, strap them on over a warm sweater or hoodie. It’s simple, chic, and comfortable as hell.

12. Switch workout shorts with leggings

Deciding what to wear to workout is hard enough without having to factor in the ever changing weather. Instead of going for a jog in spandex or Nike shorts, switch over to leggings. They’re comfortable and can be worn in the gym and out of it. Bring an extra top with you to change into and you can go from working out to working it. Just be sure to shower first!

13. Wear high waisted bottoms with crop tops

This pairing not only lets you utilize your summer pieces, but is also extremely figure flattering and easy to wear. You could go with high waisted jeans, a skirt, culottes, etc.

14. Opt for a tank or bodysuit rather than a bralette under sheer tops

Sheer garments were huge this summer, so to keep the trend rolling, go for something a bit more conservative to avoid autumn shivers. Instead of a bralette, try wearing a basic bodysuit or a fun tank under your sheer top. It’s more practical, but doesn’t sacrifice style.

15. Stick with autumnal tones

While bright neons are cute at the beach or poolside, they may be a bit too bright for the cooler months. Stick with warm hues like burnt orange, mustard yellow, and deep red, or rock cooler toned purples, forest greens, and muted grays.
