Every now and then, I love to rewatch some of my old favourite 90s movies. The 90s decade brought a lot of amazing entertainment, some of them very serious and iconic and others fun and goofy. The list for 90s movies that everyone should watch is huge, and this small selection will definitely not do it justice. However, here are some of my top picks for those who are looking for a place to start, especially you young people who may have not had the chance to watch them growing up. This list is comprised of fun teenage 90s movies and some films that are often overlooked, that are important to know about to enhance your pop culture knowledge.
I’m starting off this list with one of my all-time favourite teenage rom-com movies. If you haven’t already, this is a movie that is essential to watch. This story is a loose adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew in a modern high school setting, with 90s classic actors such as Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger. It is definitely a heartwarming movie that hits close to home for all ages, exploring the trials and tribulations of teenage love.
Jawbreaker is the original Mean Girls, with Rose McGowan as Liz, the leader in the group of popular girls at school. The fashion, sass and the lengths that these girls go to cover up a murder makes this cult favourite a must watch. Some of Liz’s one-liners are far worse than Regina George, making her the original mean girl. I bet that if Regina and Liz were up against each other, Liz would win!
My Cousin Vinny is a 90s movie that you can’t miss. The iconic outfits worn by Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei are almost enough to make this movie a must watch. Joe Pesci is brilliant as a personal injury lawyer with no experience trying to help his cousin who has been named as a suspect in a murder. His hilarious character is accompanied perfectly with Marisa Tomei’s perfect Italian American fiance role. This movie is a definite must watch which has 90s written all over it.
Boyz In The Hood is an extremely important 90s movie that everyone should watch. The setting in the Crenshaw ghetto allows us to explore the problems within that neighbourhood in the 90s with sadly very tragic results. The wisdom of Cuba Gooding Junior’s father and the lessons he learns from his religious girlfriend challenges the idea of stereotypes and explores the neighbourhoods sadly overlooked and almost encouraged gang and drug culture.
The Virgin Suicides is budding director Sophia’s debut film exploring the tragic story of five beautiful teenage sisters and the trials and tribulations exploring all things that come with adolescence and a repressive family setting. This a must watch with the fabulous Kirsten Dunst in the leading role.
Of course, no 90s movies list would be complete without one of the most iconic teen movies of all times: Clueless. Ugh, as if! The iconic fashion and journey exploring Cher’s growth through the events during high school as the head popular girl, who is misguided but with a heart.
This 90s movie is an absolute classic which will bring you back to your childhood. The kidnapping of the Looney Toons by aliens calls for them to arrange a basketball match to determine their fate. They enlist the help of the iconic retired basketball player Michael Jordan. If you haven’t already, this movie is an absolute must watch to enrich your knowledge of 90s popular culture.
This list has of course forgotten many absolute classics such as Pulp Fiction, Casino, Goodfellas, Thelma & Louise and Cruel Intentions but aims to provide you with some titles that may sometimes be left off of some must-watch lists.
