What To Bring And What Not To Bring To College

Packing for college can seem like an overwhelming task. No matter how time-consuming and frightening it may seem, it still has to be done. Here is a list of the very basic but essential things you need to pack for college and things that you might believe you should bring at first but you’d be better off leaving at home.

What to bring:

  • Bed Linens: Bed linens are definitely essential. You can add your personal style to your room by picking out bed linens that match your personality. You can even invest in a mattress pad for extra comfort on those dorm beds.

  • Mini Fridge/Microwave: You may want to invest in a mini fridge and microwave to store and reheat leftovers or when you bring home your family’s cooking from weekend visits.
  • Shower Caddy: If you are going to be living in a dorm that has community showers, you should definitely get a shower caddy so you can easily transport your soap and shampoo to the showers.

  • Cleaning Supplies: Part of being away from home means doing your own cleaning. Make sure to bring plenty of cleaning supplies!
  • Laundry Supplies: You will also have to do your own laundry if you haven’t been doing so already. Bring plenty of detergent and softener with you.
  • Organized Storage: Invest in storage bins to keep your room organized. You can use them to organize clothes, shoes, or whatever else you need.

  • School Supplies: This is definitely important! You can never have too many pens, papers, notebooks, folders, etc.
  • Pictures of your family and friends: Add a touch of home to your dorm room! Bring pictures of your friends and family to decorate and it will help with homesickness.

What not to bring:

  1. Your entire wardrobe: If you are going to school a close enough distance from your hometown you don’t need to bring all of your clothes at once. Pack for the season and you can always get more of your clothes when you go back home.

  1. High school clothing: You can bring a few of your clothing items that represent your high school but things like Letterman jackets, can be left at home. College is about starting a new chapter so embrace it by leaving things like that at home.

  1. Extra of everything: There is nothing wrong with bringing extra bed linens, cleaning supplies and hygiene products but you definitely don’t need extra appliances. All they will do is clutter your room and collect dust.
  2. Furniture: Most dorms come furnished, so there’s no need to bring furniture with you. This will also just clutter your room.

  1. Desktop Computer: If you have a laptop, you should definitely leave your desktop at home. All it will do is take up unnecessary space and will more than likely go unused.
  2. Anything on your school’s “Do Not Bring” list: Most schools have a list of items that are prohibited. Make sure you don’t bring any of those items in order to avoid write-ups and other consequences.

  1. Candles: Most dorms don’t want you to have candles in your rooms. You can definitely get air fresheners or battery operated flicker candles instead.
  2. Pets: If your dorm allows pets, I would advise you to leave them at home for your first year. College requires you to adjust to a new schedule and you should adapt to that before taking on the responsibility of a pet.
