Peer pressure is something everyone has experienced at least once in their lifetime. It’s hard being the odd one out when all your friends seem to be having fun doing something you’re not. Maybe you’re starting to feel left out when your friends talk about having sex, or you’re starting to get embarrassed because you’re [this specific age] and you’re still a virgin. But sex is something you have to decide for yourself. Don’t let peer pressure get the best of you, and do something you might regret just because you want to feel accepted. Here are a few reasons why it’s okay to still be a virgin, no matter how old you might be!
If you rush into having sex before you’re ready for it, there’s a very high chance you’re going to regret it. Nobody wants their first time to be awkward and full of bad memories, so why rush it? Take your time, and slowly ease into it. Your virginity is something you can’t take back no matter how hard you wish you could, so saving it for when you’re ready is a very important thing.
Not everyone has a sex drive- maybe you’re asexual and just not into sex. This is a completely valid and real reason as to why you may still be a virgin, and it’s not something you should ever be afraid to admit! You’re not “weird” or “different” just because you feel this way- you’re just being yourself.
A great benefit that comes from being a virgin, is that you never have to worry about pregnancy scares! While condoms may be 99.9% accurate, it isn’t always the case and pills aren’t really good for your health. But if you’re still a virgin, you won’t worry about that at all. Your period’s coming late? Don’t worry, at least you know you aren’t pregnant. If you’re a guy, you never have to worry about being a father too soon, either. Not only that, but you never have to worry about getting sexually-transmitted diseases or infections.
Instead of viewing your virginity as a burden you want to get rid of as soon as possible, why not view it as a milestone you have yet to celebrate with the person you love? Sex is a liberating thing, and it’s something you should enjoy while doing it, especially if it’s your first time. Don’t feel embarrassed because you’re still a virgin, look forward to the amazing experience you just haven’t explored.
Who gives a shit what anyone has to say about your virginity? Sex is something you have to decide for yourself, and yourself only. You’re more than what people say you are, and your body is your decision- not anybody else’s’. Prioritise what YOU think is most important, and do what you feel is right based on that.
If you’re still worried what other’s think of you, here’s my advice: it’s okay to still be a virgin, because guess what? You’re own person, and you shouldn’t let peer pressure dictate what you should or shouldn’t do. You shouldn’t feel ashamed just because you bloom a little later than others!
