How Often Should You Exercise? This Is What The Experts Say…

How often should you exercise? This is a question many people are curious about, and the answer differs from person to person. Exercise is becoming more and more popular now that there are so many lush gym apparel brands like Gym Shark and Neu Apparel.

The answer to how often should you exercise ideally depends on what your goal is; to gain muscle, lose weight or just keep generally fit.

According to Woman’s Health, if you want to lose weight you should increase the number of workouts a week, but if you want to gain muscle you need to incorporate rest days to allow time for muscle repair. Ideally, the right number of sessions you exercise per week differs from individual to individual and largely depends on many factors relating to your body and your routine and even the equipment you use. For instance, new starters will train marginally less than regular fitness fans who pretty much live in the gym.

When we break it down, we already know thanks to new research published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, that half an hour of cardio a day will help increase your metabolism and overall fitness, but logically how many people just do cardio nowadays?

That being said; working out every day, even if it’s half an hour cardio, isn’t sustainable. “If you go every day you won’t be able to maintain a useful intensity and you’ll get bored,” says Lee Archer, a personal trainer from Bristol.

And he’s right, when I worked out every day for a week I became bored and lethargic and my workouts became half hearted. This means that sometimes more is actually less; the more you exercise the less you will achieve as you will become unmotivated.

So what can we take away from this?

  1. Listen to your body!
  2. Everybody is different so everybody exercises a different amount. One week you might exercise 4 times but the next you might exercise 3, and that’s okay because you put yourself first and listened to your own aches and pains.
  3. An individual and goal-oriented plan will help you to achieve lasting results.

We hope these tips helped you answer the question of how often should you exercise! Remember, keep  your health in mind, listen to your body, and give it what it needs!
