Here’s How To Walk In High Heels Without Looking In Pain

It’s hard to admit, but high heels are actually a total pain. Yes, they can be the one thing to complete the perfect outfit, and yes, they do make your butt and legs look better, but why do they have to hurt so much? Here’s some top tips for how to walk in high heels  — keep them in mind for your next event or night out.

1. Choose a chunkier heel

First things first, if you’re not an expert on how to walk in high heels, go for shoes that have a wider heel. Shoes with platforms, block heels or wedges will be your best friend. They’ll feel like flats, but will still give you the look and height of high heels. Next time you’re out shopping, keep an eye out for chunky heeled shoes — you’ll thank me later.

2. Straps are your friend

It’s not only the heel that matters when picking out a pair of high heels! If you’re looking for some extra support to save you from the dreaded pain after a night out, then opt for a pair of strappy heels. These shoes will give you extra support around your ankles, so you’ll use the full force of your leg. That way, you won’t be carrying all your weight on the balls of your feet, and you’ll walk around in heels effortlessly.

3. Invest in gel inserts

Head to your local pharmacy and purchase some gel insoles for your heels. There’s something for everyone, depending on your specific support needs and the shape of your shoe. For stilettos and barely-there heels, it would be smart to buy some extra-cushioned gel patches for just under the balls of your feet.

4. Walk with your heel first

Aside from a good pair of shoes, there’s also a method for how to walk in high heels without looking in pain. Runway experts advise walking with your heel down first, then following with your toe. Most people try to walk by stomping their whole foot down, and not only does this look really clumsy, it also makes for some painful walking!

5. Posture is everything

Don’t slouch, and keep your head up. If you’re constantly hunched over when walking in heels, then you’re just priming yourself for a fall! Simply keeping your head up can make the world of a difference when walking in heels, not only in the way you look, but also in the way you feel.

6. Work your core!

Bear in mind, walking in heels is a whole different game to walking in flats. When walking in high heels, don’t forget to work the rest of your body, not just your legs! If you work your core, it can alleviate some of the weight from the balls of your feet, and that way, you won’t look like you’re in pain as the day (or night) goes on.

7. Practice at home, first

The old saying is true: practice makes perfect. Whether you’re new to the world of the walking in high heels, or you’ve just purchased a brand new pair, it can’t hurt to practice walking around your house. Break your shoes in and get a feel for walking in heels by wearing your high heeled shoes as often as possible inside, before you take them for a spin outside.

8. Bring friends for backup

If you still think you’re in for a night of pain, make sure to bring your friends for backup! I’ve been on many a night out where groups of girls are clutching each other for balance, and although it might not be the most graceful way to walk in heels, it can be helpful in just taking some weight off your toes for a little while.

9. Pack foldable flats, just in case

When all else fails, it can be good to have a pair of emergency flats in your bag. Look for a pair of foldable ballet flats that you can stash in even the smallest of purses, that way if you really don’t think you can bear walking in heels anymore, you’ll have a way out.
