Helpful Top Tips On How To Organise A Messy Wardrobe

Whether you have a tiny wardrobe in student halls or the walk-in wardrobe of your dreams, it should be functional and organised so that you can easily find what you’re looking for. However, in reality, the mess in many people’s closets quickly gets out of hand and as the items begin to line the floor rather than the rails, it is time to do something about it! These tips on how to organise a messy wardrobe should make getting ready on a morning much easier.

1. Declutter

Pick up all the clothes and accessories that have ended up on the floor and then take everything out of the wardrobe and lay it on your bed. Set up a keep pile and a donate pile to take to the charity shop and sort through each item one at a time. You should keep anything that you wear often, that you wear on special occasions and that you will need when the season changes. You should donate anything that doesn’t fit you anymore or that you haven’t worn for a year and you can throw out anything that is worn or has seen better days. One good tip for decluttering a messy wardrobe, is that if you have new or branded items that you’ve never worn and don’t want any more, you can sell them on Ebay to make some extra cash!

2. how you want to organise your items.

Anything you wear frequently should be stored in the most accessible place and anything currently out of season or that you only wear for special occasions, can be put somewhere less close to hand. You can even store winter clothes under the bed during the summer, and vice versa, to save space in your wardrobe. Why not try a cheap storage solution like vacuum sealed bags or an under-bed container?

There are several easy ways you could choose to organise a messy wardrobe. Firstly, you could colour coordinate items so all your black tops are in one place and you’ll be able to find the specific item you need easily. You could also categorise your clothing into tops, skirts, dresses, trousers and cardigans, so you’ll know where to look for items to make up an outfit. You could further group your clothing into separate seasons, placing your winter clothes at the back of the wardrobe during the summer, if you need to keep them in your closet all year round.

3. Store bulky clothing

I recommend you use all the same hangers, preferably narrow velvet ones which save space and prevent your clothes slipping off into a heap at the bottom of your wardrobe! One of the best tips to organise a messy wardrobe, is to put all the clothes back in the wardrobe with the hangers facing backwards. When you wear an item, turn the hanger back the right way and in six months you’ll be able to see what items you haven’t worn since you last decluttered and you can then decide if it’s time to donate them! You can also use upper shelves for handbags and purses, which you can stuff inside each other to save space!

When you are going to organise a messy wardrobe , you may realise you need some extra storage. If you need extra hanging space and your wardrobe is tall enough, you could add an extra rail. The easiest way to do this is with an closet doubler rail, which hangs from the top rail, like the one in the picture below. Alternatively, if you don’t have that many items that need to be hung up, you could add some shelves, a set of drawers or some storage cubes into your wardrobe, giving you more storage space for t-shirts, jumpers, PJs, underwear and jeans that can be folded or rolled. Storage boxes are particularly good for separating and categorising items and you can even label them so you know exactly where to find everything!

4. Organise your shoes

When it comes to shoes, these can be stored on racks, or if you lack space in the bottom of your wardrobe, you could hang a shoe organiser on the back of the wardrobe door and store smaller pairs of shoes in there. Another tip for how to organise a messy wardrobe, is to install adhesive hooks or a hanging organiser onto the back of your wardrobe door to store accessories like scarves, belts and jewellery.
