What To Know Before You Get Your First Spray Tan

Summer is slowly coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your sun-kissed skin! Fake a tan year-round (and avoid the consequences of harsh UV rays) by opting for a spray tan. If you’ve never gotten a spray tan before and want to know what the experience will be like, read on for everything you need to know before you get your first spray tan.

1. Exfoliate before your appointment

To make sure that your spray tan doesn’t go on all patchy, make sure to shower and exfoliate before your appointment. This will help get rid of dead skin and soften any dry patches.

2. Don’t forget to shave/wax

It’s best to shave or wax before your spray tan, as even the slightest amount of stubble can cause the tan to apply unevenly. By shaving beforehand, you also help preserve your tan, as shaving can actually remove some of the product and cause it to fade faster.

3. Don’t wear makeup

Makeup can act as a barrier for a spray tan, so if you want your face to match your body, it’s best to show up makeup free. Most places will also supply some makeup wipes, so you can use these in a pinch to remove makeup and any deodorant residue.

4. Wear an outfit you don’t mind staining

On the day of your spray tan, come in a loose outfit that is preferably also in a dark colour. Spray tans can and will stain your clothing. Plus, if your clothing is too tight you run the risk of rubbing some of your tan off. This also means no socks or flip flops!

5. Come prepared with reference photos

Most of the time, you’ll be asked how dark you’ll want to go. For this, it’s best to arrive with some photos for reference — be it of a celebrity or even yourself with a natural tan. Also let them know what the tan is for, for example if it’s for an event, as they might make your tan lighter or darker depending on how long you want it to last.

6. Prepare to strip

Most spray tan salons will ask you to strip down to your comfort level. For the most even tan, it’s best to go all out and either go naked, or wear the tiniest underwear possible.

7. The colour will probably appear darker at first

Don’t freak out if your spray tan looks a lot darker than what you asked for immediately after application. This will usually fade in about 24 hours to the desired shade and you will fall in love with the look of your first spray tan!

8. Keep the rest of your day free

It’s best not to make any plans for the day as you will leave the place looking like an Oompa Loompa. Definitely don’t go to the gym because sweat will cause the tan to go all streaky. Plus, you’re only safe to shower at least 8 hours after a spray tan, so it’s probably best to spend the rest of the day at home.
