8 Egg Hair Mask DIY’s Everyone Should Know

We need to ensure we care for our hair in both cold and hot conditions. Using a hair mask is one way to do this. Summer completely frazzles my hair as it is so thick, and the humidity makes it super fluffy, so I want to share with you 8 egg hair mask DIY, that are super easy to make at home, to make sure that your hair stays luscious in the summer heat.

Egg hair masks are one of the oldest hair care routines, dated back to ancient times, which are used all over the world; Italy even has egg shampoo. The vitamin B12 in eggs helps to prevent hair loss and leaves hair feeling soft and silky which is why it has become so popular to put egg in your hair masks. Also eggs are full of protein which will help to strengthen and moisturise your hair naturally with no chemicals. Here are 8 different ways to use egg in your hair masks:

1. Mix egg with aloe Vera and olive oil.

The aloe Vera will strengthen your hair while the olive oil replenishes it; leaving it bright and no longer dull. Mix together 2-3 tablespoons of egg yolk (not white), 4-5 tablespoon of aloe Vera and 1 tablespoon of hot olive oil and then apply it to your whole head of hair starting with the roots. Ideally leave it on for half an hour and then rinse off with no shampoo. (Note: this is not suitable for oily hair).

2. Mix egg with banana and honey.

This hair mask is amazing to help prevent damage to the ends of your hair. So if your hair is brittle this is the one for you as the banana and honey will enhance the natural moisturizing provided by the egg. Mix 1 egg and 1 banana in a bowl then add 3 tablespoons of honey and make sure it is all blended. Let the mask stay on all your hair for an hour and then rinse with shampoo.

3. Mix egg with milk and olive oil.

Similarly to the first hair mask, the use of olive oil will naturally moisturize your hair and scalp. However by adding milk you will ensure that your hair doesn’t grab onto too much of the oil and go greasy. This is the best option for those of you who want a deep treatment but have oily hair. Mix 2-3 tablespoons of egg yolk, 1 tablespoon of hot olive oil and 3 tablespoons of milk. Then smother on your hair and scalp, brushing through the strands, before rinsing it off with cold water no shampoo. If your hair seems greasy then wait an hour and rinse with a small amount of shampoo. (Note: apply to damp hair to ensure less greasiness).

4. Mix egg with coconut oil.

One of our favorite egg hair mask DIY cobines coconut oil and egg. Coconut oil is a well-known conditioning agent that can be found in a lot of shampoos and conditioners. But these products also contain a lot of acids and chemicals, so if you want to tackle your dry hair naturally then this is the hair mask for you. Mix together 3-4 tablespoons of egg white (not yolk) with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Then apply to the main body of your hair; try to avoid your roots as nobody likes a greasy scalp. Wash off with cold water and shampoo, no conditioner, after around 15 minutes and use twice a week to ensure progress.

5. Egg and lemon curd.

Not only will this hair mask smell lemony fresh but it will help reduce the amount of hair that is falling out. The lemon curd strengthens week hair and will keep dandruff at bay. Mix 1 whole egg with 4 tablespoons of lemon curd and gently apply the thick mixture to your scalp. Leave on for half an hour and then rinse with shampoo.

6. Egg and lemon juice.

If you have no lemon curd lying around then lemon juice will work just as good. This is because the lemon juice will help to cleanse the scalp and keep away dandruff. Mix 2 egg whites (not yolks) with 4 tablespoons of lemon juice and massage it into your scalp for 5 minutes. Then leave it on for a further 5 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.

7. Egg and castor oil.

Along with the benefits of egg, this choice of egg hair mask DIY will help hair growth due to the castor oil. This is because castor oil prevents balding. Mix together 2 eggs with 1 tablespoon of castor oil and mix well. Make sure to massage it into your scalp and brush it through the strands of your hair to ensure full coverage. Then leave on for 30 minutes before rinsing off with shampoo (do not use conditioner).

8. Egg and Greek yogurt.

Yoghurt is full of probiotics and fats which help to moisturise hair and keep it silky smooth. Mix 1 whole egg with 2 tablespoons of natural Greek yoghurt and apply to damp hair. I recommended starting with the roots and working your way to the ends as this mask is really thick. Brush it through your hair and then leave on for anything between 15 minutes and an hour. Then wash it off in tepid water with shampoo. Use this mask once a week for good results.

If you are funny about the smell of eggs they try adding some natural lavender oil or lemon juice to any of the egg hair mask DIY. It would be silly to not treat your hair just because your nose doesn’t agree.

REMEMBER: these quantities are based on shoulder length hair so double it up for longer Rapunzel length locks.
