As a fashion marketing major, I know exactly what it’s like to explore the glamorous and competitive world of fashion. It’s not all about high end brands and iconic designers, but studying fashion marketing is one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have. Here’s 10 things every fashion marketing student can relate to.

1. Everyone asks you for fashion advice.

Studying fashion marketing is like automatically receiving your qualification in fashion advice. Your best friend’s going out for the night? Your sibling has an important job interview? Be prepared to receive screenshots of possible outfits from everyone you know; you’re now their resident fashion expert.

2. You can’t walk into a store without noticing the visual merchandising.

Your trips to the shopping mall won’t be the same. Apart from looking at the latest styles and buying your newest outfit, you just can’t stop yourself from analysing a store’s visual merchandising. You find yourself spending way too much time staring at store windows, even thinking about how you could re-arrange the store better. It’s both a blessing and a curse.

3. It’s now your homework to keep up to date with the latest collections.

Who knew homework could actually be fun? You now have an excuse to always buy the latest fashion magazines and watch the latest fashion shows, it’s for your study right? There’s nothing better than reading a fashion magazine without the looming procrastination guilt.

4. You can never decide what to wear to class.

So long are the days of only wearing your high school uniform. When studying fashion marketing, your outfit is the most important part of your degree (apart from studying of course!). You’re now not surprised when you spend an hour picking out what to wear. There’s just too many good options!

5. You finally realise how big the fashion industry is.

Fashion marketing is one of the biggest industries, with so many different careers to choose from. Every week you change your dream job; Fashion styling? Event Management? Everything just sounds so interesting!

6. Everyone thinks studying fashion marketing is useless.

“Why not just study regular marketing?” You’re now used to explaining your decision to everyone you meet. It would be so much easier if everyone knew how important the fashion industry is, but it’s a small sacrifice to study what you love.

7. You’re always on the quest for a fashion internship.

When studying fashion marketing, experience is key. You can’t apply for your dream job without any experience, so you’re always on the lookout for the perfect fashion internship to give you a taste of the fashion industry.

8. Your love/hate relationship with group assignments.

Working with others is at the core of fashion marketing, but be prepared to encounter every type of group assignment. Doing all the work while others slack off? Actually working together to create something amazing? Group assignments are like flipping a coin; it’s either so rewarding or SO tiring.

9. Presentations will become second nature.

You may be introverted at the beginning of your degree, but you definitely won’t be at the end. Be prepared to come WAY out of your comfort zone. It’s now no surprise to you when every subject requires at least one 10 minute presentation.

10. You’re incredibly hard working and ambitious.

Studying fashion marketing is so more work than people think. You need ambition, passion and drive to keep up the fast-moving workload of the fashion industry. It’s hard work, but you wouldn’t have it any other way, right?
