After College

10 Things To Do Before Starting A Full Time Job After Graduation

Most of us will live to at least 80 years old, which is around the average life expectancy in the U.S. Given that, we all have around 60 years left. Who wants to spend that precious time right out of college sitting in an office, working towards someone else’s goals, and having limited free time that’s spent taking care of responsibilities? Not me. Instead of picking up a career in your degree right away, take some time to enjoy life and try a few of these 10 things to do before starting a full time job.

Visit family:

You’ve been busy with school, and in your time off you want to spend that time with friends that have also been away. Take this opportunity to spend quality time with your family. Your parents and grandparents will enjoy catching up with you.

Explore your hobbies:

College can be stressful with papers, exams, group projects, research, clubs, and more. Stop pushing your hobbies to the side and start playing sports again, singing, or painting. Do more of the hobbies that have made you happy to fill your time.

Volunteer:

It’s time to make a difference in the community and give back. Not only do you get to help others, volunteering reaps in benefits for the person doing it. You may feel a sense of fulfillment, purpose, and connection to the community.

Take an odd (part time) job:

Become a server, teach a class, cook at a restaurant, star as a movie or TV show extra, or babysit the neighborhood kids. Find something that your high school self wouldn’t mind doing to make extra money that isn’t overly tasking.

Make the gym a habit:

Don’t let the freshman 15 from over 3 years ago stick. Get to the gym, work out, eat healthier, and feel more confident. Your body will thank you, once it adjusts to lots of exercise. Once you’re able to make going to the gym a habit, it won’t feel like a chore anymore.

Read more:

Being in university can make reading seem as awful as going to the gym. Reading can be as liberating as any of the other things on this list. Books expand your mind, and something can always be learned from them.

Learn a new skill:

Have you always wanted to play an instrument? Maybe take up surfing or long boarding? Or even become a better artist? Take it upon yourself to continue learning, even if its not in a typical classroom setting.

See Also

Travel:

Go somewhere you see your Insta-crush exploring. Take a cheap flight, stay at hostels, and find some locals to show you around. People are not meant to stay in one place, so take your next adventure on a beach, in the rain forest, or a desert. See something new in the world.

Teach English abroad:

This is an easy way to travel cheaply. You will immerse yourself in a different culture and way of life. Aside from that, you’ll meet some amazing people along the way. These people will share life altering stories with you about their crazy lives.

Learn about yourself:

After college, a lot graduates feel lost. You’ve spent your entire life as of yet being defined by your education, and now you’re done. What makes you yourself? Do you know what you want in life? What makes you happy? Find those things out and reflect on all that you’ve accomplished during your college career.
