20 Things I Will Miss Most About Mebane NC

Welcome to Mebane, North Carolina…  and I already know what you’re thinking, it’s pronounced “Meh-Bin,” not “Me-Bain”… and yes we are the town with a Tanger Outlet. I’ve lived in this sleepy little town for 17 going on 18 years. Like any small(ish) town, there are countless pros and cons to living here. I am a 2017 graduate of Eastern Alamance High School and will be continuing my education at North Carolina State University this upcoming school year. So, here I am, a little less than a week before moving in sitting at a corner booth at my local coffee shop compiling 20 things that will make the trip back home totally worth while.

1. Eastern Alamance High School.

I’ll start off simple. As much as I hate to admit it, these were the best four years of my life, so far at least.

2. Anything on the menu at Hibachi. You knew this one was coming.

3. Driving on 119.

…while the sun sets creating a beautiful water color mural in the sky, with all four windows of my car rolled down, blasting my favorite songs and wondering if life could get any better than it is in that very moment.

4. Muffin’s Ice Cream Shoppe.

I might be a little biased on this one given I worked here for a year and a half… but in case you’ve never been, order a scoop of Carolina Crunch in a homemade waffle cone. You’re welcome.

5. Having to bring your canoe to school to get from the parking lot to class on days that it monsoons at school.

6. I was lying about #5…. I definitely won’t miss that.

7. Finding absolute steals on the clearance rack at the Saks Fifth Avenue at Tanger.

I’m broke but realllllly want Free People clothes, even if it does have a foundation stain or a minor tear in the sleeve.

8. The $2.50 kids meal at Martinho’s.

Shoutout to Mr. and Mrs. Martinho, you are good good people. Thanks for always letting me order a kids meal even though I’m technically almost an adult. I’ll miss you guys the most (but don’t tell my friends I said that.)

9. Going to the 24 hour McDonalds at 11 p.m. on a Friday night and ordering a 20 piece McNugget meal yet feeling absolutely zero guilt because Eastern just single-handedly beat our rivals butt in football.

10. The $1.79 t-shirt rack at Goodwill

An absolute gold mine, you just have a dig a little bit.

11. The five inch thick memory foam mattress topper and fluffy down comforter on my bed.

I’m really really REALLY going to miss this.

12. The way the sun dances across Mebane-Graham Lake when you drive across the bridge in the morning on the way to school.

13. Going to Sheetz at 12:40 a.m with all of your friends for the sole purpose that you’re all bored out of your mind and it’s the only thing open.

14. Watching girls take pictures of their chai bubble tea at local coffee shops desperately trying to be, like, totally artsy, taking a sip, and then throwing it directly in the trash.

15. Driving by the Eastern Auto Spa and scoping out all the cute boys working there washing cars and suddenly deciding you need a car wash too.

16. The Dogwood Festival.

Who doesn’t love rickety carnival rides you’re guaranteed to get sick on? And who can pass up on the one opportunity a year to get a funnel cake?

17. The constant struggle of trying to decide whether to go to La Fiesta or La Cocina because they’re so similar yet completely different.

18. Late night trips to McDonald’s with all of my friends obnoxiously screaming every word to all of our favorite songs the entire way there.

19. The relationships I’ve built over the past 17 years that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Whether they were successful ones or not because each and every one of them taught me a very valuable life lesson.

20. And last but surely not least, my parents.

Thank you for sticking by my side through thick and thin and always making sure I had what I needed, for always making sure I was up to fashion, even if the style at the time was hot pink Justice gauchos and matching silly bands, for making sure I always had a ride to every single cheer practice, sleepover, and my first movie theater date with my first boyfriend. Thanks for pushing me to be the strong woman I am today. Most importantly, thank you for being so supportive of me and loving me unconditionally. I’ll miss you more than anything in the world.

Though I could probably compile a list of a million reasons, I’ll keep it short and sweet. Hopefully by my short list of 20 Things I’ll Miss Most About Mebane, you will see this town the way I have my entire life. Mebane, thank you for giving me the best 17 (almost 18) years of my life.
