The Cutest Skirts To Fit Your Body Type

Skirts are cute, comfy, and stylish, and they’re versatile enough to be paired with just about anything and still look cute. T-shirt and miniskirt? Adorable. Sweater and pencil skirt? Classic. Pretty blouse and a high-waisted midi skirt? Yes, please! But while skirts are cute and fun, it can be hard to figure out what type of skirt best fits your body type. But have no fear – here is our list of the best skirt types to fit each body type, from strawberry to pear, mini to maxi skirts.

1. The Strawberry Shape – Flared and Midi Skirts

First, let’s establish what a strawberry shape body type looks like. If you look at a strawberry, they’re wide at the top and become more narrow at the bottom. So someone with a strawberry body shape will have wide shoulders and a larger bust, but with narrow hips and a small waist. Strawberry body shapes are also referred to as inverted triangles, with the point of the triangle lining up with the narrow hips and waist.

The best skirts for a strawberry body shape are flared skirts or midi skirts, depending on whether you want to emphasize and create curves. One type of flared skirt will cinch at the waist, curve around the butt, and become more narrow again around the middle of the calves before flaring out at the bottom. This creates the illusion of curves while also showing off your slim legs.

Another option is to choose a midi skirt that flows out from the waist. Rather than trying to create curves, you can choose a fun, comfy skirt that takes the emphasis away from your curves and concentrates more on your small waist and slim legs. Plus, they’re super fun to spin around in.

2. The Banana Shape – Mini Skirts

The banana shape, also known as the rectangle body type, is where a person’s waist is barely narrower than the bust. The hip and bust measurements should be almost identical, creating a traditionally ruler-shaped body. Women with a banana-shaped body will have a small bust, narrow hips, and an undefined waist.

With your narrow hips and slim legs, you can easily rock a form-fitting mini skirt. The problem with mini skirts comes with larger hips or butts, which constantly pull the hem up higher and higher until you’re basically flashing everyone you walk past. But if you have an athletic, rectangle body type, mini skirts will pull the eyes to your slim legs.

If you choose a mini skirt that flares out, you can also create the illusion of curves and hips. Plus, there are so many cute types – a plain pleated white, a plaid fitted mini skirt, a cute black tule mini. With so many options, you’ll never run out of cute skirt choices.

3. The Apple Shape – High Waisted Flared Skirts

An apple shape body type, also known as a round body type, is where the shoulders, bust, waist, and hips are about the same size (though the shoulders and hips may be slightly smaller). Apple body types have a large bust and an undefined waist. This body type is commonly misconstrued as being about weight, but really it’s about body measurements. If your shoulders, bust, waist, and hips all line up to being about the same measurement (with a larger bust than a banana shape), you have an apple shape body type.

For skirts that fit the apple body type, there are a lot of options. The most popular skirt style is a high-waisted flare skirt. Now, this doesn’t have to be a long maxi like I have pictured below – it can also be a shorter, knee-length skirt, or an a-symmetrical midi (like the second picture). The idea is to choose a piece that will create the illusion of a smaller waist but will flow out instead of hugging your hips and butt. This will help create a more defined waistline and pull the concentration to your legs.

By choosing a high-waisted skirt, you will not only pull your waist up, but you’ll also make it look slimmer and more defined. And personally, I have a little more junk in my trunk, so I like to choose fun skirts that don’t hug my curves so tightly (making flowy skirts the best option).

4. The Pear Shape – A-Line and Empire Waist Skirts

The pear shape body type is pretty close to the hourglass figure but has larger hips and a bigger butt in comparison to their bust. They have a predominantly defined waist, and slim arms and shoulders. The bust is usually smaller than the hips – much like how a pair is more narrow at the top with a heavier bottom.

For the pear body shape, my two top skirt recommendations are a-line skirts and empire waist (high waisted) skirts. For a-line skirts, there is a cinched waist and a slightly flared bottom. This combination will give emphasis to your waist, showcase the curve of your hips slightly, but won’t be so form-fitting that it over-accentuates wider hips.

Empire waist skirts work for very similar reasons – they have tight, high waists, but a full skirt that will bring more emphasis to your narrow waist and long legs. Both of these are longer skirt types too, so they can also give the illusion of height with slim, long legs.

For those looking for a shorter skirt option, try a tulip skirt. They’ll have the traditional length of a pencil skirt with the emphasis on the waist and legs, but their full skirt will curve around your hips a little more comfortably.

5. The Hourglass Shape – Pencil Skirts

The hourglass shape body type is the most widely sought-after body type. To have an hourglass body type, the hips and bust measurements are almost equal, with a narrower waist. The shoulders are usually round, and the legs are proportional to the rest of the body. Hourglass body types also usually have thicker thighs and a more rounded bottom.

The best skirt for the hourglass is the pencil skirt. Girl, you’ve got the body. You should rock the small waist and round bottom by wearing these cute, form-fitting skirts. Pencil skirts are going to hug your curves and emphasize your small waist, while also making your legs look long and slim. While you could definitely rock other types of skirts, the pencil skirt is going to do the best job of showing off your curves while also looking classy and cute.
