The Best Ways To Wear White After Labor Day

I will admit, I only just learned why it’s considered inappropriate to wear white after Labor Day. Apparently, people that came from old money wore white after Labor Day to distinguish themselves as the wealthy elite. Having heard this information, I now realize how stupid it is to not wear white. Why support a divide in power, and why limit what you can wear? Here are the best ways to wear white when the summer unwinds:

1. Linen Pants

White linen pants are a staple in my closet. The lightweight material makes these pants breathable on warmer days, but will also keep you from freezing as the fall weather approaches. Aside from their comfortability, I love that they go with everything. My personal favorite way to style white linen pants is with a tied-back halter top and chunky sandals. These pants are perfect for beach days; something about them feels very coastal to me. Maybe it’s because I use mine as a bikini cover up. Whatever you do, just make sure your pants aren’t see-through. Some white linen pants run the risk of being too thin.

2. Baseball Hats

I am absolutely here for the comeback of the baseball hat. White baseballs hats in particular give off such a clean, put-together vibe that I’m trying to achieve. Even though, 90% of the time, I’m wearing a baseball hat to cover up my messy hair, I feel ten times more stylish with it on. You can style your hat with a baggy sweatshirt and shorts, like in the picture above. My go-to way of wearing a baseball hat is with biker shorts, an oversized top, sunglasses, and dad sneakers. Buy a plain white hat, or find one with a logo on it!

3. Exercise Dress

Another trend that I love is exercise dresses as casual wear. I was never fan of athleisure before, but these dresses have me sold. In white, the dress has a new, inexplicable energy. What’s best about this type of dress, other than it being cute, is that it usually comes with built-in shorts. Not only does it have shorts, but most of them have pockets, too! Pockets are such a rare find for dresses, so I’m happy to see that companies are starting to include them in their products. Wear this dress on a run, or at the grocery store. You can rock it everywhere!

4. Overalls

You’ve seen blue overalls before, but white ones are just as cute. I’m currently looking for a pair to wear with a red crop top underneath. Overalls are so playful and comfy, as well as a great transitional piece from summer to fall. If you have short hair, I feel like you can pull off overalls even better. I’m tempted to get a bob just so I can look like the picture above. Pair your overalls with a colorful pair of Converse, and you’re good to go!

5. Denim Skirt

I’ve had my white denim skirt from Princess Polly for years, and I’ve never been tempted to give them away. The outfits you can put together with this skirt are endless. Something about a skirt just feels so much more stylish than jeans. Still, you can pair the same pieces of clothing with a white denim skirt as you can with white denim pants. I usually opt for a graphic tee on top and my green Converse on the bottom. Of course, you can dress these skirts up, too. I recommend wearing a corset or halter top with it!

6. Button-Up Top

As Labor Day signifies the end of summer, the weather will start to get colder. It might still feel like summer in the afternoon, but more like fall at night. How do we confront this issue? By wearing white button-up tops. Button-up tops make it possible to dress for hot weather in the day, yet be prepared for a cooler night. Throw on your button-up over a tube top or sleeveless dress, and you’re all set. Like white overalls, button-up tops are commonly found at thrift stores. I got mine for $5, and it’s Ralph Lauren! What a steal.

7. Layered Maxi Skirt

I’ve been seeing this same skirt everywhere lately. It can work with so many style aesthetics, from boho to That Girl, sporty to European chic. Since it’s a maxi skirt, it’s a great piece to have for those not-too-hot, not-too-cold days post Labor Day. I think it looks amazing with a cropped graphic tee or a tube top. Really, anything cropped or tight-fitting will work wonders here. I would try to avoid pairing baggy shirts with a loose maxi skirt, as you don’t want your figure to be swallowed up.

8. Corset Dress

My white corset dress is the star of my closet. My sleeveless dress is from Princess Polly, and though I was hesitant to order it online, it fit perfectly. This is the perfect piece for a romantic look, especially when paired with kitten heels. I like to keep my accessories simple when I’m wearing this dress; usually, I go with my small gold hoops and a dainty necklace. If you want to be extra classy, throw on a hair ribbon. Perfect for all the coquette lovers out there!

9. Jumpsuits

Jumpsuits are the fashion gods’ greatest gift to mankind. Too lazy to match a top with bottoms? Wear a jumpsuit. Want to look polished without putting in a ton of effort? Wear a jumpsuit. See? It’s an easy solution for everything. Pair with some gold hoops and platform sandals, and you’ve got the perfect end-of-summer look. For a stylish fall outfit, throw on some chunky boots. You can go for a long-sleeve jumpsuit in the colder weather, or a flowy, lineny set for the summer.

This Labor Day, don’t be afraid to rewrite the fashion narrative. Wear what you want to wear, regardless of what the fake Labor Day “rules” say.
