The Best Met Gala Looks Over The Years

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala is where celebrities of high prestige convene in their most creative, unique, and show stopping looks. As they strut up the infamous Met steps, their photographs are taken and remembered for years to come.

After this year’s Met Gala, what better time to take a trip down memory lane and look at the most iconic looks over the years.

1. Beyonce, 2015

Would this even be a real list if Beyonce wasn’t on it? Short answer: no.

Queen B brought the fierceness (as usual) to the 2015 Met Gala in a Givenchy Haute Couture see-through number. Her hair was done in a high, sleek ponytail adding an extra level of sass to her look.

The sequins on her dress brought the perfect amount of color and dazzle, while also keeping the attention on the sexy vibe of her overall look.

2. Princess Diana, 1966

The late Princess Diana was and still is, the epitome of class and elegance around the world. Her fashion choices were no exception to this standard.

At the 1966 Met Gala, Princess Diana’s look was simple but classic. She wore a Dior dress by her friend John Galliano. The dress was from Galliano’s debut collection as a Dior Creative Director. Diana added detail with her extravagant necklace and matching earrings.

3. Blake Lively, 2018

Last year, Blake Lively blew us away with her look for the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” Met Gala. She sure did look heavenly, we’ll tell you that!

Blake wore the most over-the-top and absolutely jaw dropping Versace gown. Lively’s burgundy train had beautiful gold embroidered detail to match the gold tiara-like head piece she rocked.

She looked absolutely beautiful. This look is one that would be hard to ever top.

4. Cher, 1974

This was one of the most iconic Met Gala looks of all time. It is no surprise that it was worn by Cher, an icon in her own right.

Designed by Bob Mackie, Cher dawned a see-through, floor length gown detailed with sequins and feathers on both the sleeves and bottom.

This is a look that many have recreated to pay honor to Cher and her legacy.

5. Taylor Swift, 2014

This is a classic, soft, feminine look from Miss Swift. From soft old Hollywood-esque curls, to a signature red lip, this is one of Taylor’s most beautiful looks.

Her baby pink gown, designed by Oscar de la Renta was a show stopper for sure. The focal point of the gown is the large bow in the back of the dress, that flowed down into a large train.

This dress was so iconic, that Swift later used it as one of the looks in her ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ music video.

6. Rihanna, 2015

Rihanna is the queen of fashion statements. Her 2015 Met Gala look really amped up her status as a fashionista.

Guo Pei designed a yellow gown with an extreme train for added drama. The gown had fur sleeves and a fur lining around the train. On the beautiful yellow fabric, beautiful details are incorporated. These detailed patterns match the design of Rihanna’s gorgeous headpiece.

7. Jackie Onassis, 1979

Jackie Onassis- also known as Jackie Kennedy- was another woman who was adored by America for her sense of elegant and classic fashion.

Her 1979 Met Gala look was designed by Valentino. She wore a strapless black gown, with a ruffled and voluminous skirt and matching shawl. She added a bit of glitz with her earrings.
