5 Reasons Why You Need To Start Thrift Shopping

Thrift stores have seen a resurgence in popularity in recent times, and for good reason. They are a great way to find unique clothing items that you would never find in a retail store. But there are plenty of reasons to shop at a thrift store outside of just finding good clothes. Thrift stores serve an important role in our community and contribute to a more environmentally friendly way of life. So if you are someone who likes to shop at the mall, here are some reasons why you should consider shopping at a thrift store. If you are already into thrift shopping, great! Here are the reasons why you need to keep doing what you are doing, and how you can contribute to sustainable thrifting.

1. Thrift shopping is much cheaper than retail shopping.

Thrift shopping is undoubtedly cheaper than shopping at chain stores or boutiques. This is obviously because the clothes have been worn and used before. But this doesn’t mean the quality of the clothes is any less than at a store. You can often find high-end brands at a thrift store that would’ve costed a fortune if purchased through retail. Building an entire wardrobe by only purchasing through retail stores is going to be extremely expensive, and several other people will likely have the same outfit as you. Thrifting your wardrobe is much more cost-effective and will give you a more original look than the fast-fashion offerings of the stores in the mall. Ultimately, thrifting your clothes are going to give you endless choices of all different styles and time periods at a much cheaper price.

2. Shopping at thrift stores offer much better finds than those at the mall.

Thrift shopping is not limited to what is in season or what brands are choosing to stock in their stores. You can find a multitude of clothes from all different time periods and brands. Thrift shopping is also not limited to brick-and-mortar stores. Apps like Poshmark function like virtual thrift stores, where you can find used clothes from all over the country and world. This expands your options far beyond what the mall could ever offer. If you live in an urban area, you are lucky. Urban areas are not only full of thrift stores, they are often stocked with more unique and rare clothing items. Also, Thrift stores do not only sell clothes. You can find a variety of useful but cheap items, whether it be furniture, kitchen appliances, or books. Overall, thrift stores are going to offer much better finds whether it be through in-person stores or virtual thrift shops. There are endless possibilities in terms of what you can find and how you can improve your wardrobe.

3. Thrift is very environmentally friendly and reduces the carbon footprint.

Thrift shopping is incredibly environmentally friendly. Instead of spending money on newly produced clothes that were likely made in a factory emitting pollution, they were then shipped via truck, plane, or ship, all of which emit an exorbitant amount of pollution into the atmosphere. When you purchase your clothes at a thrift store, all of the items have been used before, meaning you will not be contributing to any more unnecessary production of clothing. It also means that you are contributing to keeping these items out of dumps and landfills. Overall, by shopping at thrift stores, you are doing your part to reuse and recycle already existing items and products, thus contributing to a reduction of pollution. The more that people adjust their habits from buying new clothes to thrifting, fewer new clothes will be demanded to produce, bring consumption down. This will lead to less pollution and a smaller carbon footprint on the part of retail brands. If you are looking to live a more sustainable life, thrift shopping is a great way to start.

4. Thrift shopping helps the surrounding community.

No matter if you live in a small town or a big city, the community around you always needs support and extra help. Thrift shopping is a great way to contribute to your community. Most thrift stores operate as non-profit and contribute to the surrounding community to better the quality of life of those who live in it. This is especially true in urban areas, where there tends to be a much more immediate need of community help that thrift stores can contribute positively to. Not to mention the fact that thrift stores offer affordable clothing and everyday products for an affordable price. Ultimately, it’s important to pay it forward to thrift stores, as not only do they contribute positively to your wardrobe, they serve an important purpose in the community to meet the needs of the less fortunate and use the funds from sales put back into the community.

5. Thrift shopping gives you the ability to resell no longer needed goods.

Finally, thrift stores need to accumulate inventory somehow! If you have old clothes, books, toys, or other everyday items that you no longer need, avoid throwing them into the trash. Not only does this contribute to harmful landfills, you are destroying items that another person would enjoy using. This is where thrift stores play an important part. Take these items to thrift stores, and they will be able to pay you a small sum to take away these items you no longer need and resell them in the store. Not only are you getting a little extra cash, you contributing to the well-being of the thrift store and ensuring new products are being put into stock. Remember one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, and thrift stores are the place where others can find their treasure. So if you are cleaning out outgrown clothes, do not just throw them away, do the environmentally and ethically friendly thing and take them to a thrift store where they can find a new life, and avoid being wasted.
