Popular Trends We Wish Never Happened

No matter the year or the season, there will always be those once popular fashion trends that we look back on and just ask why. This list includes some of the once Popular Trends We Wish Never Happened.

To begin, I just want to point out no hate to those who may still love these trends—I bet you rock them. These are just solely based off my own opinion and which trends I remember being once popular while growing up. In fact, I myself have owned a few of these items in middle and high school and still question how I once loved to wear them. What’s trending in fashion at any certain period of time is honestly a crazy concept. A product that was once popular can quickly got out of style in the blink of an eye, then find itself coming back during a later date. For example, skinny jeans were once the “it” pair of pants to own, and replaced flare jeans instantly. However in 2021, skinny jeans have slowly started to go out of style with the return of baggy, flare pants, with some brands to even start selling less of them.

I have included some fashions trends that feel nostalgic and dated, as well as trends that I still see worn today, both as trends we wish never happened.

1. Hooded Denim Jacket

When I thought of the Hooded Denim Jacket, I was instantly taken back to my time spent in high school when these jackets were a popular fall wardrobe essential for girls. I want to make sure this isn’t confused with pairing an oversized hoodie with a denim jacket, but instead the attached, fitted hoodie to what gives the illusion of a denim vest. To be honest I have never understood the appeal of this jacket concept, making it one off the top trends we wish never happened.

2. Hippie Headbands

I never have been one to hate on headbands, however these hippie headbands have always been a no in my eyes. The excess of stretchy fabric sitting on top of the hairline has always been a bizarre, unflattering look to me. These headbands are similar to workout headbands when it comes to keeping your hair back, except those are actually necessary when working out. The hippie headbands are this style just for the sole reason that they are designed that way, giving the illusion of a flat hairline that eliminates any volume at the top.

3. Overly Distressed Skinny Jeans

Like I mentioned before, skinny jeans are slowly going out of style, but occasionally I’ll pass an American Eagle or Hollister store at the mall and see these jeans in the window. Who doesn’t love a great ripped jean, but overly distressed skinny jeans are just simply too much. I’ve always found overly ripped jeans to be quite trashy looking and make your outfit look messy and not put together. I think many other fashion fanatics can agree that overly distressed skinny jeans are one of the trends we wish never happened.

4. Peplum Tops

I remember trying on clothes at the mall in high school and the popular peplum style tops just never seemed to do it for me. I have never found these tops to be the most flattering on myself, considering how they ruffled part falls. I still see these peplum tops sold to this day from some brands I do love, yet I know they’ll never be my cup of tea.

5. String Leather Choker

Okay, I have a lot of feelings towards choker necklaces. In fact, I actually love and own tons of chokers EXCEPT these string leather ones. I’m not really even sure if people still wear these chokers, but I do still see them being sold at popular trendy stores for some reason. These necklaces are one of those trends we wish never happened simply because I think it is a weird concept to have a leather as a necklace. Black chokers from the 90’s made their comeback around 2014, but I think these long, wrap chokers should have stayed forgotten.

6. Wedge Boots

Both wedge boots and sneakers are something I instantly thought of when coming up with ideas of trends we wish never happened. Despite this, I myself did own a nude colored pair of these wedge, tie up boots and I regret it to this day when looking back on my fashion choices.

7. North Face Fleece

I guess these once trendy styles are starting to become a list of my own past fashion choice regrets, as I too owned this North Face Fleece…also in pink. When I look at these jackets now I find the gray paneling mixed with different colored fleece to be very unappealing to the eye. I think these fleeces would have been a little better without the gray paneling, but still are a questionable jacket choice compared to the numerous better options sold by North Face.

8. Flare Culotte Pants

Flare yoga pants have made a fashion comeback that I’m so here for, but don’t confuse them with the once popular flare culotte pants worn by many in the early 2000’s. I’ve see these pants worn for both working out and casual wear but always wondered what the hype was.

9. Fitted Denim Jacket

We love a denim jacket moment, but these tight fitted jean jackets that came before the oversized fit are not the kind to complete your OOTD. Denim jackets are one of my favorite pieces for layering, whether it’s with a hoodie, sweater, or just over a cute dress, yet these skin tight options don’t allow you to really layer at all. A lot of the time these jackets are pretty thin material as well, not really having much of a purpose.

10. Long Fitted Cardigans

Cardigans are great for throwing over a cute top to add some extra warmth. However, when shopping for cardigans I would recommend choosing more of a chunky, knit cardigan that has an oversized fit. These thinner, fitted cardigans that personally give me 2012 vibes are a bit outdated when it comes to fashion that is trending now.

Let us know which clothing pieces you also agree are the trends we wish never happened in the fashion industry.
