Our Favorite Audrey Hepburn Looks Of All Time- And How to Copy Them

Over twenty-seven years after her passing (at age 63), Audrey Hepburn still remains an icon of both cinema and style.debut  Her timeless mannerisms, wise sayings (such as “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!”), and classy wardrobe choices are simply immortal, and will doubtlessly remain so for years to come. As we transition into the cooler months here, we’re keeping an eye out for some key clothing items that will look fabulous both today and years ahead, and Miss Hepburn is the perfect person to look to for autumnal/wintery flair. Here are our favorite Audrey Hepburn looks of all time, and how you can copy them.

White Shirt And Tan A-Line Skirt

In her debut film, Roman Holiday, Audrey graced us with a plethora of elegant, flowing gowns and chic menswear-inspired looks (such as her striped pajama set). In fact, a smiling young Audrey Hepburn holding on to Gregory peck as they zoom through Rome on his moped is probably the image most people envision whenever they hear her name. What we love about this particular look is that it only really consists of a couple key elements (namely, the cinched waist and the flow of the skirt), with details like Audrey’s short, hip haircut or her strappy sandals being a secondary focal point. To copy this ensemble, head to your nearest consignment store and look for a Peter Pan-style white blouse, preferably short-sleeved (or find one here), a calf-length tan flowing skirt, a large tan or camel-colored belt for the waist, and any type of flats (straps or no straps) to complete the look. If you’re after a pop of color, go for a silk scarf around your neck (you Mom probably has one in her closet). We dare you not to order a large gelato cone and sit atop a flight of stairs dreamily (although that would make a cute instagram post).

Black Pants And Long Sleeved-Top

We’ve long been admirers of Audrey’s European touch, in particular her French-inspired ensembles from Sabrina and beyond. She may have said that “Paris is a good idea”, but for most of us poor college and grad students, taking a pleasure trip to the capital of France just isn’t an option. But we can channel her Parisian vibes with this flattering, sophisticated, and simple monochromatic look. As you can see in the photo below, Audrey’s cigarette pants hit just above her ankle, drawing attention to her cute studded flats and making her legs look long. She pairs the trousers with a boatneck-style long-sleeved shirt, likely in wool or cotton, and her pretty earrings top the outfit off, putting the spotlight on her lovely face. To make this look your own, keep an eye out for slim or straight-cut black pants (ones that are all one shape, avoid bootcut or flares), expressive flats (any flats with something a bit different to them), a long-sleeved black shirt or turtleneck (also very Hepburn-esque) and a pair of show-stopping earrings or a statement necklace that somehow matches your shoes (either by color or by accents such as rhinestones). You’re going to have that je ne sais quoi without setting a foot abroad!

Classic Trousers And Striped Long-Sleeved Top

Once again Audrey shows us that you don’t need to show a ton of skin to stand out (which is extremely useful when the weather outside proves brutal). Miss Hepburn looks outstandingly pretty in this look, wearing a striped long-sleeved shirt (which looks nice and cozy) and high-quality dark trousers which, by the look of it, seem to fit a bit more snugly at the hip, with a wider leg (here’s where you can experiment with a slight bootcut or flare jean). In this outfit, Audrey isn’t wearing any accessories at all (although that old-school phone makes for a pretty adorable prop), but her lined eyes, slightly done lips, and groomed hair and eyebrows still shine in this getup. To copy this look, try getting yourself a pair of dark linen pants and a soft cotton striped shirt, perhaps second-hand on Poshmark from brands like JCrew or Madewell. Spend a bit of extra time on your makeup to get a slight winged eye look, filled in but natural-looking brows, and a peachy lip stain. Gorgeous!

Trench Coat

Whenever the windy weather settled in to whichever city she was resining in at the time, Audrey would paint the town in Equestrian-chic, European-inspired clothes. One piece she absolutely rocked was the trench coat, usually in a neutral color such as honey or ivory. She’d usually pair the coat with a classic French twist updo or some high-quality pearl earrings, a type of pairing that would make Thomas Burberry gleam with pride. In the look below, Audrey’s smile is even more striking than her clothing choices, and her pigtails add a kind of youthful energy to her cultivated costume. You can imitate the same kind of balance by getting a versatile trench of your own (you don’t have to take out a loan for one- Goodwill often has a great selection) atop some slim cut pants (maybe the cigarette ones from earlier), a warm top, and some dutch braids and a quirky detail. Audrey was all about embracing your natural age… so if you’re still young, embrace it!

Pale Pink Dress

Just like the movie, Audrey Hepburn really is pretty in pink! We just can’t get over the artistic beauty of this look. It’s no wonder that Pinterest is just ridden with Audrey Hepburn images, as photographers couldn’t get enough of her! What’s so fascinating about this particular look is that Audrey completely embraces the femininity of it all, with her cascading pink pleated gown, her delicate white gloves, and red lipstick. But there’s still a silent strength and structure to the outfit too, with Audrey’s dark brown hair, minimal eye makeup, and chunky gold bracelet. Once again, Miss Hepburn has subconsciously taught the world how important the art of balance is in fashion. It’s possible to find toughness even in the girliest of clothes, and tenderness in menswear and more classically masculine pieces. If you’re going after a classic, twirly frock like Audrey’s, pair it with an edgier accessory, like a black choker or some pumps in a fun color. If you’re more drawn to edgy pieces, add a couple of modestly feminine notes, such as some diamond studs or an heirloom ring.

“Breakfast At Tiffany’s” Pants And Slouchy Top Look

Let’s be real- every outfit Audrey wore in Breakfast At Tiffany’s was the stuff of dreams. But a floor-length black gown and a priceless diamond necklace (or at least a decoy) would most likely only be appropriate for a Halloween Gala (we can almost guarantee everyone will guess who you are). Audrey’s “Moon River” crooning look, however, is one that we could definitely wrap our fingers around for everyday wear. Miss Hepburn creates this look by pairing some nicer, structured white flats (with little bows on them) with dark linen (or even denim) pants, a slouchy grey-white top, and a white headscarf. Almost everything in this outfit is white, which draws the eye up to her lined eyes (she keeps the rest of her face relatively bare), except for her pants, which draw the eye to her face and hair with their dark color (dark colors draw the eye up). Her brunette hairstyle also has a slight wave, which is very flattering for her face shape. To achieve a similar look, keep an eye out for a cashmere blended slouchy sweater-top (or cotton if you’re allergic) to go with some dark blue pants and pretty flats (do your best to keep the color of the top and sweater similar). By just adding a simple eye look (a slight smoky eye could work just as well as a striking cat eye), you’ve basically got the whole look down. It’s up to you whether or not to add a thick pale headscarf, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt your Hepburn-inspired aesthetic (nor would a wooden ukulele or red brick backdrop).
