10 Nigerian Foods You Need To Trying During Your Trip

The Nigerian culture is so rich, that Nigerian food couldn’t be any lesser, than tasty. The culture is so lively, from the culture of dance, music, family, it should drive you to make it onto your bucket list to go and visit. Here are the top 10 choices of Nigerian Food that you should make it a mission to go and eat:

1. Nigerian Jollof Rice

Nigerian Jollof Rice is a rice that is universal to different parts of Africa, but each country puts their own spin on it that’s why there is a battle of jollof rice between some Africans lol. But jollof rice is a rice that is cooked in a tomato sauce with different spices added. Rice can be paired with any meat of your choosing.

2. Ofada Soup

Ofada soup is a peppery sauce that has a combination of peppers, asorted meats and locusts beans. Locust beans is a type of spice that is added into the dish. Add a boiled egg to it and have it over white rice. Tastes amazing. One of my favorite Nigerian foods to eat when I can.

3.) Obe Egusi

Yoruba stew made with grounded melon seed, leafy and other vegetables, meat or seafood. It’s seasoned with crayfish and locust beans. You can pair this up with Fufu,which is pounded yams boiled.

4. Puff Puff

Deep fried, light, sweet dough balsl coated lightly with sugar if wanted. This is one of my all time favorite Nigerian foods to eat as a dessert.

5. Pepper Soup

Pepper Soup is a very spicy soup that is made thin. It’s considered a “drinking soup” or a broth. It’s made with fish or assorted meats, and leaves of uziza.

6. DoDo

Deep fried plantains not banannas, people usually have the tendency to get mixed up with the two lol. You can get creative in the shapes that you want them in; circles, cubes, but make sure they are cut into thin slices. It can be made as a snack, a side dish or even just a meal itself. Add a bit a salt after deep frying.

7. Chin Chin

Its crunchy, sweet and are shaped like cubes. It’s a deep fried pastry that is enjoyed throughout the region of Nigeria and other West African countries. Fried butter and sugar baby. Enjoy.

8. Suya

Skewers that have spiced cut meats that is cooked over a open flame to the crisp. It is served with raw cooked onions.

9. Akara

Simply just deep fried bean cakes. A lot of people when making this snack, they use peeled brown beans with blended onions with spices and fry it in vegetable oil. This considered to be my least favorite Nigerian foods to eat.

10. lla Alasepo

This is a mixed okra/okra soup that when made, should be consumed with something solid like pounded yams, fufu. It’s two different meals in one, it being a stew with okra. There is a combination of different meat and seafood that is conjoined. The best part about this, is after you will be stuffed and that calls for a nice nap.

Being able to explore and travel the world to experience the culture and foods, people is an amazing gift to have, so it’s important that you explore the world around you. Learn new things, taste different foods and even start cooking them if you can.
