Do It Yourself

Pick Your Passion – New Past Times To Pick Up For The Summer

During the summertime, we often find time to be of an endless supply. During the first week of summer, this newfound time is most perfectly spent catching up on sleep and binge-watching endless hours of Netflix. However, once it hits the third week, something is missing. The TV shows that you love slowly become less meaningful and don’t hold your attention quite like they did that first week. While boring, completing homework and studying for tests and quizzes provided a sense of fulfillment that you’re not quite getting during the course of the summer. However, in order to achieve this satisfying feeling of accomplishment, you can also pick up a passion and have fun to learn something new! Here are four new past times for you to pick up.

Art— Drawing and Painting

In the case of art, it is never too late to begin drawing and painting. Similarly, the only way to get better is to practice, practice and practice. These two qualities make art the perfect pastime for the summer. To start out, try either watching tutorials on watercolor painting or renting art books from the public library. If you’re interested in buying a good quality art book for drawing, I’d suggest looking at Andrew Loomis’ Art books. Not only are they very informative, but they are also easy to follow and not too dry.

Cooking and Baking

Considering that you need food to survive, cooking and baking are one of those basic skills where it always helps to improve and practice. Whether you want to generally increase your skills at the art form or perfect a specific recipe, this pastime will have you working for hours. And, you’ll have a sweet reward after all your hard work! This is easily one of the best new past times to pick up!

Music— Learning a New Instrument

Just pick an instrument and an instruction book and learn to become the next hit musician! All jokes aside, even if you do not make it big time, there is nothing quite like learning to perform music. Not only is it incredibly rewarding and requires patience, but you will also come to appreciate musicians and even learn a thing or two about the parameters of music. Start slow with simple tunes and then work your way up to your favorite song!

Clothes— Sewing, Knitting, and Crocheting

By learning to sew, knit or crochet clothes, you will be one step closer to being richer.  Why? Because these homemade items, such as sweaters and scarves and hats, make such good (and free!) gifts! Also, this is the perfect activity to pick up while listening to podcasts, watching tv, or catching up with a long distance friend. Therefore, choose this activity if you have a good TV show you have been dying to binge watch— you won’t regret it!

Gardening and Growing Flowers

While this activity is often seen as reserved for old ladies, it also can be perfect for people with lots of patience and determination. Growing a plant takes time and care— much like raising a child! Therefore, nothing can rival a parent’s pride when they see the budding plants pop up out of the soil and grow up to be tall and beautiful flowers. The great thing about this activity is that it can be done both in and outdoors— so grab some soil or a pot and get growing!

Exploring the Outdoors— Hiking and Kayaking

Because of the geographical requirements of water and open spaces, this activity might not be feasible for everyone. However, if you can do it, this is a wonderful pastime that really gets you out of the house and ready to enjoy nature! Plus its a great way to enjoy time by yourself and get a great work out. Therefore, if you fo have access to these resources, I’d highly recommend trying out this pastime.

Reading Inspirational Books

Last but not least, one of the best new past times to take up is to read some do-it-yourself and inspirational books. While this passion does seem like something only your mother would do in her late forties and fifties, this hobby is worth considering. That’s because it enables you to not only read someone else’s advice, but it also enables you to analyze your life objectively (as in according to the book’s rubric instead of your own). So while this pastime maybe boring at first, it could lead you to deep revelations about your life and you should definitely try it out!
