5 Music Genres You Didn’t Know About

Are you tired of always playing the same 5 songs in the car? Don’t worry. Say no more! I will introduce you to 5 music genres you may or may not know about, but their uniqueness will spice your playlist up. You might have heard some of the songs, but I can guarantee you didn’t know about the fantastic category they belong to. We are constantly being bombarded with Tiktok and Instagram Reel sounds. Do we know where they come from? Do we know what we listen to? I can guarantee you that if you dig deep into a song you like, you can find similar sounds. You can find more of what you want by investigating the song’s producer or, in this case, the genre.

Let me introduce you to my newly discovered themes:

1. Small Room

If you enjoy Indie Pop and are looking for a cozy vibe, Small Room is for you! If you are curious, no paternity test is needed; it is literally Grunge and Soft Rock‘s lovechild. This genre is similar to Bubblegrunge but can be distinguished by its slight (sometimes not so slight) vocal reverberation. Which creates the sensation of songs being recorded in a small room (as its name implies). Chill vibes you will be able to fully appreciate in a soothing environment, as it’s perfect for a reflective night in. So get deep and creative, write a poem, or splatter paint on a canvas… Artists in this genre are Big Thief, salvia palth, Florist, Mila Degray, Soccer Mommy, Tomberlin, and many others… I know this is somewhat of an extensive list, but don’t worry; I have compiled my favorite Small Room songs in a playlist. Check them out; you won’t be disappointed:

2. G-House

Let me take you to the club! G-House or “Gangster House” is a breakthrough subgenre within EDM. “Wait, if it’s breaking through, how come I have never heard of it?” You definitely have. Remember Stromae? He became popular in 2013 for his single “Papatouai,” he has experimented a lot in mixing electronic music with Hip-Hop, which are the main components of this genre. Other artists who have paved their way in the style are Rompasso, MVDNES, Dwin, TRFN, WYR Gemi, and KEAN DYSSO. It might even be a good kickstart if you are more lyrically invested when listening to music but want to get into EDM. You won’t have to give up words just yet; as mentioned before, there are Hip-Hop factors that will scratch that itch. But when the beat drops, you’re on your own kid. It’s rave time! 3. Miami Indie

Just like Miami isn’t just South Beach, it’s not only Latin Music either. Miami Indie is a derivation of Rock fueled by sunshine and good vibes. The Sunshine State’s It-city has a fantastic and diverse band scene for all musical palettes. You can find Palomino Blond, The Polar Boys, Cannibal Kids, Mustard Service, Supergold, Stellus, and many more on mostly all streaming platforms, so you can have your own Miami show in the living room. If the 305 is far from you, it is still not out of reach.

On the other hand, if you happen to be close by or visit, don’t miss out! But when do I know when there’s a show? You might ask. Simple, multiple Instagram accounts are dedicated to promoting and updating the public on upcoming events, such as Backroom Sessions or The Scene MIA. So what are you waiting for? Grab a plane or your AirPods and discover a different side of Miami:

4. Funk Carioca

Does Tubarão Te Amo ring a bell? It’s the top trending sound on Tiktok! This song is not only Neymar‘s newfound passion, but it has also become the anthem for the World Cup 2022! While this song is on your radar, I have the perfect opportunity to introduce you to this fun Brazilian genre. Even though you won’t understand the lyrics unless you speak Portuguese, the beat will make you want to dance until you can’t. There’s this saying: “always pass the AUX to the nearest Brazilian,” If this is your first time hearing about it, read that again; it’s no joke. The main artists that rule this genre (and Brazil) by storm are Ludmilla, MC Kevinho, Gloria Groove, DJ LK da Escócia, and MC Meno K, among others. I have collected some of their gems so you can surprise your Brazilian friends and make everyone dance at the next gathering.

5. Afrofuturism

You’ve most likely heard about Janelle Monaé and OutKast. Did you know they had a baby? Yes, and they called it Afrofuturism. Though they did not invent it, they remain the faces, if not the icons, of this genre, within the music industry. This “new” wave of R&B has been growing over the last two decades, and many famous artists such as Thundercat and Steve Lacy precede it. Even though I am only pointing out its musical impact, I must point out that Astrofuturism is not solely a genre but a cultural movement created to reinvent the colonist-tainted history within the African Diaspora and redesign it with science fiction and futuristic elements such as aliens. A prime example of that would be Beyoncé‘s RENAISSANCE. This also reveals a more electronic version of R&B. Other artists in this genre would be WILLOW, FKA Twigs, Sudan Archives, and Kelela. Remember, you don’t need to call NASA whenever you feel like going to space. Just click the link below:

Music is the door to culture, emotions, and artistic expression. Hopefully, you leave that door open. Whether you like these genres or not, I want to encourage you to discover new music; countless styles are waiting for you. Now it’s your turn to figure out which one speaks (or sings) to you.
